Newb engine question

Been noticing a burnt oil smell lately, originally thought it was gear oil but after some investigating, it's coming out of the motor. When I pull the oil fill cap, there is some blow by but I wouldn't consider it excessive. With the cap off, I can definately smell the burnt oil. Thoughts on what it is? I'm wondering if it is a bad ring but there is no blue coming from the exhaust. I did a quick search but all I found about burnt oil was checking an auto trans.

Did you just change the oil?
Most diesel rated oil stinks like a burning leak for the first few hundred miles after changing with Rotella being the worst by far.
The smell comes from a wax like additive that is used to hold additives in suspension that starts burning off when it gets hot.

Thanks for the welcome! Actually, I am getting ready to change the oil. I have had the truck for over a year and haven't noticed the smell until the last couple of weeks. I use Delo 400 and change every 3000-3500.
