Lower micron fuel filter?

I searched a bit and found a few mentions about this, but not enough to go on. So I apologize in advance if I missed a good thread about this, if so please point me in the right direction....

I am the (so far) very happy owner of a 2007.5 6.7 CC 4x4 dually auto, fantastic tow vehicle for our 16-17k loaded 40' goose race trailer. To this point, 27.5k total miles, at least 15k of that has been towing, I've had a grand total of only one CEL, about 18 months ago, and that was easly fixed with a dealer reflash. But on some of my racing forums that I'm on almost daily, I've heard horror stories about clogged injectors in the 6.7's. Some of these folks are saying that the clogged injector problem is the Cummins-spec 7-micron fuel filters, and the solution is a lower (finer) rating, I've heard 5 and even 2-microns. I tend to listen to the experts about this stuff (this forum!), and not people like me who just own a stock one and tow with it. I haven't been on here in a while (because my truck has been almost perfect to this point), but I'm due for another fuel filter change before a long tow later this month. What is the concensus, if there is one, about the rumored injector issues? Would there be any problems running a lower-micron filter? Anyone know of any? Thanks in advance for any info!

Vern

I don't think you have to worry about a clogged Injector so much as a worn out one, or one with the nozzle tip broken off.

The HPCR injection operates at such a high pressure that it becomes a water jet machine.

2 Micron seems to be the common tip for maximum protection.

What brand would be appropriate for a 6.7 and how much would we be looking at. I want one where I can drain any water easily, not like the poor stock set up.

That looks like a nice set up. One thing I was wondering about was the chance of stones hitting it there. Did you have to replace all the fuel lines, or how did you make the connections?

i mount mine where txpig mounts his. his is ten times prettier than my home made one. it is better protected than what the pix would suggest . there is two bolt holes for a seat option to mount the filter bracket. the fuel line is only inches away. i cut the line and bend it out and slip the hoses over the lines. i used wix 24348 were his fs 1212 is and 33377 where his ff 5320 is. i stock these filters for my cat equipment and transfer pumps and that is why i chose them. with this set up you do not need the truck filter but i would not take it out just gives security blanket. change the filters when the pressure drops to 0 on hard pull. copy txpig and you will be very happy

As bob mentioned, the new style fuel filters that came out with the '09 model year trucks and are now superceded to the older 6.7Ls are a 5-micron filter with a replaceable filter element (rather than replacing the entire canister as in the older style). A separate 2-micron and dryer setup will provide you with the best filtration (as txpig has shown pictures of), but for those that don't want to alter the OEM fuel system the new style OEM filter (available through Mopar and Fleetguard) is still an improvement over the older design.

Thanks.... They are push-lock fittings... No clamps needed..

Since I started this thread a few weeks ago, I'll post a follow-up. I bought the new Mopar 5-micron housing and filter from Geno's and put in on 9/26 before our 1300-mile round-trip tow from Pittsburgh to Atlanta for a race. Everything seemed to be fine, easy install, and the truck ran perfectly normal (as you would expect it would). I'm sure the 2-micron setups would be technically superior, but I feel a little better with the OEM-style 5-micron setup than the original 7-micron setup I had. I bought a spare 5-micron element from Geno's with the new housing for the next filter change. Thanks everyone for the advice.

In the 28k I've owned my 2007.5, I've only had one check engine light in late 2007, fixed by the dealer with a software flash. But during our tow down, we did have an electronic throttle warning light, it came on after a fuel stop, and stayed on for a few minutes. At the next red light, we shut off and then restarted the truck and it went off and we never had another problem. Most of the time while towing (16k trailer) we put a hefty strain on the truck, especially in the mountains on Route 79 and 77, so I'm sure we keep the soot accumulator pretty well cleaned out via heat. It is an amazing tow vehicle, just awesome.....
