Trying to convince the wife I NEED a new truck. She insist's that I should wait a year or two until all the "bugs" are worked out of the new model engine and Auto trans . So, lets hear it...How many miles and what problems....

 

Yeah I'm with your wife on that one.

Actually, I wouldn't mind buying a new Ford F450. Very nice truck but I'm going to wait a few years more and see how the Megacab is working out.

Another thing to think about:

I bet before too long Toyota will be getting into the 3/4 and 1 ton pickup markets. They're kicking butt now in the half ton category and the heavy duty market is just as robust.

And you can bet they'd have a diesel option, be priced right and be built to last.

Patience is a virtue in this case.

As for buying the F450?, does anyone remember that movie Vacation with Chevy Chase? Do you remember the thing he was driving? The Sport Family Truckster? It is a dead ringer for the new Super Duty front end. I only have 2000 miles on mine, but I still haven't had any problems yet. It is a pretty smooth running truck.

 

Yeah, X 2 on that one - that is why I opted for the 5.9l instead of waiting for the 6.7l.

2000 miles on mile and not 1 problem. Love every mile of it.

 

I like everything about that F-450 other than the engine.

BTW, when's the new Dodge redesign? 2009? So in roughly a year the 2009's will be out? That's what I'm waiting for. In the mean time, I'll enjoy the black smoke and 18-20 mpg.

 

17k miles. Couple of minor issues with unexplained CEL two times and the passenger side intercooler hose needed to be installed correctly, wasn't from the factory and started to leak boost.
Other than that it's been pretty smooth. Fuel mileage still sucks towing but hopefully that will resolve itself as I put more mileage on him.
Came from a 04.5 which was a pretty good truck but couldn't hold a candle to this baby!! Power-wise, creature comforts and general overall craftmanship.
Go for it!! We're all heading own the "green" road anyway.

 

Oh forgot, as far as the f450, a friend of mine just got one. That is one butt ugly truck!! They have to put "Super Duty" all over it to remind you that you're not driving a bug ugly box. Nice interior though, gotta give them that. AND I just outran one with a 15k 5th wheel behind me and an appoximately the same trailer on the Furd. Once we hit it, my Cummins just kept on walking away never giving up an inch!! So much for the two extra hungry cylinders and the twin turbos!!

 

I don't know if you are talking about the pickup model or the Cab and Chassis model. I have the cab and chassis model with the 6.7 engine and Aisin transmission. The truck now has 44,560 miles on it and has been perfect, no check engine lights, nothing. All I have done is change oil and filters. I've done nothing but drive it.

I have 4000 miles on it and now problems yet and I am getting around 17 mpg

 

Took my 2001 to a dealer for some service work and told the service manager I planned to upgrade my truck in the next year or two. He said stay away from the 6.7. He claims they have been nothing but problems. One truck has had the engine replaced 3 times in 80k miles , but doesn't know what the guy is using the truck for.

He told me to stick with the 5.9 2003-2006 models. Great engines and transmissions.

 

BS I'd like to see some documentation on that. I'd also like to know how anyone got 80k on a 6 month old truck. That would be 444 miles, 7 days a week. I had a 2003 model, put 345k on it. They are good but this one is better.

 

Funny, I also had my 01 at the best dealer around here for diesels and I asked the tech who worked on it about the 6.7's. He also said to keep my old one for a couple of years. He didn't get into specifics but felt the new ones are so **** complicated it will take a while to get them sorted out properly. He likes the 6spd auto though and thinks it will work out pretty well.
