Got Smoke Now, YES!!!
Well it all started last thursday when i had the chime and the check engine light come on again (third time). That same trip as soon as i shut the truck down i checked for codes and nothing
. Well i didnt have the time to take it in to get scanned and already had the p2262 ghost code pop and disappear so i was not in any hurry. Well didnt have time all weekend to take it in and yesterday on my way out to visit a jobsite i was looking in my rear view after taking off from a stop light and noticed some black smoke. I do as always and looked around looking for the chiped truck or big rig and there was nothing but a honda civic next to me????? I thought "NO WAY" next straight away i shifted up and lugged her a little and sure as hell there she was a pouring a little coal. I was so happy i bet i wasted 5 gallons of fuel just tipping the peddle every minute or two to see if she was still smokin or not.
She is by no means "pouring coals" i would say it looks like a truck with a 20 or 40 horse chip at times. Not even close to 100+ horse chip or anything like that. Got out at the house with the CEL still on and walked about and checked out all the soot on the bumper

. Well this morning I turned her on and waited for the same old chime that i was hearing for the last 5 days everytime i started it from the CEL and NOTHING look down and no more CEL!!!!! I was happy and sad at the same time because i thought it had maybe fixed the smoke issue at the same time. Well got on her this morning and sure as hell i still have smoke and NO CEL!!! Needless to say i am pumped.
My opinion on this is that i fried either my Cat or my NOX and one of the sensors tripped the CEL. It could be the DPF but i would have thought the Overhead would have read something but all is still well? I have heard a couple of people having smoke and a fried part of their exhaust. I have also heard that the ECM is a learning computer and im hoping that it got "used to" the different sensor reading and adjusted itself!! Wishful thinking im sure but it may be true. I was wondering what any of your ideas may be on this guys?
P.S. I aint taking it to the dealer until drivability issues or CEL+Code or Overhead incline me to. I didnt because codes were not present, "no harm no foul"

P.S. just took it for a spin and had the CEL come back on. No biggy, no overhead and no code just the annoying CEL. I hope i blew the DPF up and i hope it gets worse as long as it doesnt start Cat full BS and limp mode.
Noticed the truck is a little more peppy then normal. No extra sound though.

my ford has been smoking for about 2500 miles. I think the DPF filled once or twice, it went into regen and the regen maybe didnt clean it out or somehow cracked my DPF. my truck still regens but smokes pretty good.
I have 6,065 miles on her now. New Flash, Cat and DPF replaced at 3,700. Truck manfactured 03/07
I will resubmit what i said earlier about the overhead saying "cat full" if the DPF was messed up. I am guessing that it is the sensor that is after the DPF that is triggering the CEL but it will not throw codes or say anything on the overhead because the reading is actually saying "Higher Airflow" than normal instead of "lower" flow which would cause a overhead reading. I would also think that straight pipe before the DPF would be OK if im right. I think it only triggers the FULL message when one or more sensors detect a problem? Pretty neat stuff

Thanks. Mine has about 3200 miles, manufactured 03/07. My new flash was done before I got the truck. Mines a auto tranny too. Everything original but drop in k&n filter. CEL has come on twice but no codes, and eventually goes out, but no smoke.

I have had the re flashes done on mine and she still smokes a little when i lay into her. I thought i cooked the DPF or something also but the dealership said no you just pushing out everything that plugged up the first time.. Not to worried the truck still runs awsome and feels like there is a little more "pep" also..
you most likely have a cracked Catalytic Converter or DPF. Mine smokes also, and has been for the last 4,000 miles.. sometimes its a nice little cloud (more than a stock 5.9) and at other times its barely noticeable.. Either way i've had no check engine lights or anything on the overhead. I work at a dealership and hook it to the starscan from time to time to see what the regeneration stats are like.. and i have all successful regens and none failed.. So, i like that i can see smoke.. its almost like seeing hope. So i'm not replaceing the CAT/DPF until i start throwing codes and the truck doesn't run
I am going to do the same thing. Not going to let them replace it until i get the overhead BS going on again. It would be kinda nice to get a code clearer just to get the CEL light to go off. Even though there are no codes it would be nice not to have the CEL in my face
Love the smoke though. I just wish it would free up a little sound now. Oh well as long as i can smoke and still be in warranty im happy.

Mine started this same thing on a trip to northern Utah last week. My CEL has been going on and off since 7500 mi it has 14500 on it now but hardly ever shows a code. If it does show one it is the P245A, once I got a 2262 aka the ghost code. It hasn't effected the performance on the truck at all. In fact the overhead actually showed 20.2 mpg east of Cheyenne Wyo (with tail wind) on the way back, of course it went into regen shortly after and knocked that figure all to hell. Something on that trip made this happen but beats me what it was. It only does it when you throttle it a little hard on take off or passing. The rest of the time it looks pretty clear back there. My truck was also built 03/07 and as far as I'm concerned until it starts to effect performance I am going to just keep on trucking.
mine's been smoking a lot, way more than buddies 6.0 powerstroke or other buddies 05 duramax.... plenty of black stuff on the bumper
i've been popping P2262 & P245A's left & right, been to dealership several times already
