Engine Weight
Does anyone know what the weight difference is between the Cummins 6 cylinder and the two V8 diesels? I have a little bet here at work with two Furd and Chebby guys that insist their V8 diesels weigh more than my 6 cylinder does. I could swear I saw somewhere that the Cummins out weighs both of them.

I don't know what the Duramax or International weigh.

Cummins is the heaviest of the three.(1100lbs). There are pics around that show the crankshaft and the huge bearings almost 35% larger than the powerjoke. The only engine that is certified to be a medium duty engine.

Cummins at one time had that type info on their web but it disapeared a few years back. I believe the old 12 valve was 972 lbs. The Cummins 1st gen package at assembly point was 1200+ lbs which included 2 batteries/bigger radiator/ etc. It also had the crankshaft at 147 lbs. The 3rd gen Cummins is a bit heavier.
The Cummins is a MDT specked and built engine that is used in our 2500/3500 trucks with a 350k service life. The PSD/DMAX as used in their 2500/3500 trucks are LDT specked and built with a 200k service life. The DMAX as used in the 4500 trucks have different fueling and engine componets that GM says are MDT compatible such as EB as a factory option.
The Cummins is heavy for a reason.

The Cummins (5.9) is around 1100, the Powerstroke is ~ 800 and the Duramax is just a bit lighter than the Powerstroke.
But looking under the hood, you'd swear the V-8s were much more massive than the Cummins. Looks are deceiving!
