Question regarding weight and Weight Stations

Ok, so I curretly live in Jackson MN, I will be moving back to Fargo ND in 7 weeks. I would like to go through Sioux SD, and see my cousin at the same time. I was over in SD last night and noticed at the weight station it said all trucks over 8000GVW must stop. My truck is a 8800GVW and I will be pulling at 14k trailer, Total I will weight around 17-18k(truck and Trailer). Do I have to stop in SD at the weight station, also when entering MN, they say all trucks over 10k GVW, I should not need to stop going in to MN should I. I'm noncommerical, for personal use.

If I do have to stop at SD, do I need any paper work other then registration and insurance?

Personal vehicles don't stop. At least I never have! If I'm wrong then I've been wrong for 30 years. That's why my truck and trailers NEVER have my business logo or name on them....

The only weigh station I have seen that makes me nervous is in Nebraska, on Hwy 81 near the Kansas Border and Hebron. They have a sign that all Trucks over 10,000 Licensed GW must stop, including pickups with trailers.

There's also a nasty weigh station just east of Minneapolis /St Paul. I was in there working on the weigh-in-motion and they made one farmer's life very difficult. It did not help that he was towing 2 trailers on the interstate at 75 mph. Once they pulled him in, he had illegal fuel tanks, no proof purchase of the 2 trailers he bought, no title for the car on the trailer and wrong plates on the truck. 10 hours later and no load, he was finally back on the road. One lesson learned is don't lie to the weight enforcement guys. They made his life unpleasant.

But thankfully Minnesota is now BROKE and currently has all scales and rest areas closed. Just rolled through there today and they have barrels blocking all the entrances.

First your truck isn't 8800 GVW. It's GVWR is 8800.

Yes you have to stop. As you just stated your combo will be 17-18,000. Even bad math will tell you that is way over 8k.

Non-commercial vehicles DO NOT NEED TO STOP AT WEIGHT STATIONS!!!
I have been all over this country with my 5th wheel and have NEVER stopped or been stopped. Quit listening to rumors and so called experts. Weight stations are to keep the commercial guys honest, or close to it. And to make the state a little extra extortion money.
Just set the cruise control and keep truckin.

If in doubt, drive through the station. If they didn't want you to stop in the first place, they will wave you through.

In BC Canada now you need a trailer towing endorsement on your drivers license if your trailer is over 10,100 lbs, written test, driving test, and pre trip test, this is for residents. not sure if your just driving thru from out of Province or from the States. The police and scale cops have started stopping and checking people, good luck

When I had my own private RV and did a trip to TX and back, I pulled across the scales as I did not know if I should or not. I never got stopped and rolled on down the road. That was back in 2000

Like Fiftygrit said, we got the same rules now.

So far as I know after hauling commercial [2006-2008]...there is no need for a private hauler to stop at the scale. However, if you are noticeably overweight or something is suspicious about your ride, they can check you out. Any LEO can pull you over for that matter.

I say roll by and if you get stopped...be honest.
