DPF on, Rokktech backed off and......
Well, I got my H&S Stage II DPF delete system on today and I have some rambling thoughts about it and some other stuff.
First I'd recommend that you don't try this alone. I always do things alone just so I can say that I did it with no help. It's a problem I have...
Well, it would have been much easier to have a hand.
Anyways, The whole thing is pretty simple and I got it done in about 3.5 hours with at least a half hour trying to get the DPF off. It liked it's home and did not want to relocate. When I went to pull the trans X-Member off I reached for my impact wrench and the fitting on the end broke and that hose came across and smacked the heck out of my chin. I saw stars and my ears were ringing for about an hour. My chin is all swollen but you really can't see it due to my Goatee...
Oh, as I have heard on many occasions, my kit came without the exhaust clamp which must have fallen out of the crappy box they use.
So, it's on and it all went together pretty easy once I straightened the bent up ends on the SP and the DP. They really should put some bubblewrap on those things.
For me, I don't really like the sound. I think I'm gonna go with an Aeroturbine like Bronohound did. It needs to sound better than this. I can't believe some of you actually like the sound.
I didn't install the EGR plates yet because I am waiting to see if just unplugging the EGR plug will do the same without all the hassle. I know the mileage went up with just unplugging the EGR. And why the heck do these two small EGR plates list for $60.00??? That is the biggest rip ever. I'm glad they were free in the kit....
I'm happy I finally got it done and I am eager to see how the truck does now. My hand calc'd mileage went up an unbelieveable 4 mpg with just the egr unplugged. I was getting a best of 13 mpg in my normal driving routine and in 92 miles of driving I just topped off with only 5.16 gallons which equates to 17.7 MPG or something like that. If that just stays the same I
will be happy. I'll have to get out on the highway and see what she does.
The directions don't mention plugging the O2 sensor plugs back together but I can't imagine I should have left them unplugged. The truck threw a couple codes which are the same ones I was getting before and I don't know what I need to do about that. Most guys are claiming to only get the EGR code once they do both deletes. What do you guys think?
With the EGR unplugged I noticed a lot of extra timing rattle so I backed off the Rokktech. I can say without a doubt that you will get more off the line power with a Rokktech on your truck. I can definitely tell that I backed it off. I'm going to adjust it back up maybe to the middle and see how it does.
I don't want a power adder so I'm just gonna buy a code reader/clearer and clear these codes and see if they come back.
I think I'm done other than saying that my neck is tired from laying under the truck getting this all done. Reinstalling that trans X-member is kind of a pain if you are alone too....

Dodgezilla...............great to see you get everything done. Keep us posted on the results and problems you encounter along the way. I am going back and forth on the different components and for now I am trying to hold out for a completely code free system. Also this is my first diesel so this and other forums are a great education on the do's and dont's.
Luckily we will be able to upgrade to the code free setups once they come out. I was planning on waiting too but my truck started acting up lately so I wanted to nip that in the bud. I'll definitely provide results as they happen.
I have a 4" in x 6" out tip. These kits use the factory muffler and tailpipe.
Two more things I just noticed.
My idle is down a bit from where it was. Not much but enough that I noticed it.
I get some drone while out cruising too.
And I'm definitely turning that Rokktech back up some tomorrow. My off the line power is definitely down since I moved that adjustment back.
I got a scan guage to clear the codes and I'll see how she does tomorrow. I'm starting to think that the extra codes I got today were probably already there from yesterday. It was about time for them to show back up as it had been about three days since I had one.
The exhaust sound is starting to grow on me a bit. Still not nearly as nice as my 07 with no muffler but with the CAT in place. Maybe I still should think about putting a CAT back on here but with no muffler. That way I can feel better about what I'm doing to the environment.....

Well, this morning I got the really bad idle for about a minute and the white smoke for about the same amount of time. Both items are common issues with these deletes so now I have to do some reading to see if anybody has figured out how to get rid of them...
The truck runs fine otherwise.
I also continue to get about 4 codes even after I clear them...

Some people are claiming to have gotten a fooler box that plugs into the OBDII port with their kit. It was not in my kit nor was in on the parts list. I installed everything exactly as per the directions. Does anybody know how to fix this rough idle/smoke issue???

talk to H&s and tell them your problems. Thats how the other person got the OBD port box, that was having similar problems to you. They kept sending him things to try and he eventually got that box....
Good night, the H&S kit still has this many problems? There is something to be said with being the first to market and with being the cheaper option in the market but boxes that fall apart on delivery which cause missing pieces and poorly running equipment, after being to market as long as they have, is just plain unacceptable. Im sorry this happened to you, Zilla. I can't comment on ANY of these problems though as my BADP kit arrived in perfect condition, installed properly with all parts included, and hasn't given me a single problem since install. I haven't had any white smoke or rough idling, it has run just like it always did before; just breathes a ton better.
I can't get on their website right now to get you a link (i imagine their server is down after Ike) but I have the Gen 1 4" kit that included downpipe and cat/dpf delete pipe. It came with a straight pipe (dpf/cat delete), a downpipe (nox absorber delete), fooler box with three pigtails (one for each EGT sensor), and 3 bolts/nuts/washers to mount the DP to the SP. I had to take my dremel tool to the inside of the downpipe on the turbo side to get it to fit over the turbo flange but other then that, it bolted right on as easy as could be.
It's really not that bad. The idle clears up pretty quickly. Some trucks do it and some don't. I always seem to have one that does the bad stuff!!
I'm starting to wonder if me just having the EGR unplugged instead of actually doing the proper delete with installing the plates could be the issue here....
And I see lots of guys saying their truck runs so much better after the DPF delete. My truck was running great before, and it still does, but it's no stronger than before....

Dodgezilla, about your EGR delete. There are some things you need to do ASAP.
First there is a butterfly valve in the intake manifold that the computer closes when it gives EGR. You need to remove it. Take the tube off at the EGR valve and use the gaskets to Fabricate 2 thin plates to block the egr, and then unplug the connector like you did. While you are doing this, disconnect the neg bat cables. The computer learns as it goes and this will help it to start fresh.
When removing the butterfly valve, you will need a small Torx bit, (can't remember the size right off hand), and you will need to grind a small amount off the back of the 2 screws before you remove them so they don't break on removal. They do this to make sure they don't come off and end up in the engine.
You WILL get codes if you don't have a way to clear on start up each time.
I have a Juice w/ Attitude that does this and it works flawlessly. I believe the engine will De Rate if you don't.
That being said. With my DPF delete I felt, and saw a very small improvement on fuel economy and performance. With the EGR hit was much more. At May Madness I dynoed and with the Juice off I got 266 HP and with it on 5 got 385HP. The truck hauls ****, and gets a solid 3mpg increase on the highway. I admit to not seeing much increase around town, but that is totally because I have TOOO much fun driving it.
P.S. the white smoke is most likely raw fuel. Mine did the same at first and then went away after I did the EGR delete correctly and got the butterfly valve out and reset the defaults by undoing the negitive cables for a half hour.
Good luck and please let us know if this cures the problem.

I'm going out right now to check the butterfly while the truck is running. I installed the blockoff plates this morning and it didn't fix anything. The white smoke and poor idle were not there this morning either. I started it before I installed the plates...
I'll report back soon...
