"Change Oil" lamp At Less Than 3k Miles

Hello, guys. My computer overhead screen is reminding me to change the oil. I had the oil changed by the dealer at 1507 miles and here it is less than 1500 miles later (2800 total miles to be exact) and I'm getting this reminder. I have a feeling that the dealer didn't reset the computer after changing the oil. Even so, isn't it a little soon to be changing oil? I did both a visible and tactile check of the oil and it appears to be fine (of course, there could be pollutants in there which I can't detect).

I'm currently traveling through Montana while towing a fifth wheel trailer and would like to wait until I arrive at my next destination, a few hundred miles down the road before changing the oil. Do you think I'll be OK doing this or should I change it now? I can't believe the oil can be spent in such a short time. Thanks...Ed

Mine called for a change at 2400 . I changed it since it was the first one. The thing came on again at 4800 so I asked my Dealer what was up since I am not going to change oil every 2400 miles.
They told me to reset and not worry about it. They tried to reset the interval for the oil change light but it could'nt be done , at least they couldn't figure out how to do it.
I plan on changing every 5000 miles. If I were you I'd reset and go!

At 2800k, I was on my way to the dealer for the first & free oil change when the oil change notification cames on. Of course, no real explanations from the service department other than reset it and keep on driving. I hate going to the dealer, it seems they don't have a clue.

Mr Ed,
I experienced the same problem, mine came on at ~3k miles. I reset the light myself and will not worry about an oil change until ~5k miles. I've ran across many comments on various forums about this issue. Seems to be a re-occuring issue. My origional concern was in regards to the "Excessive soot" issue that prompted the latest TSB Flash. I was concerned that since my truck had about 2.5k miles on it before the TSB Flash was performed that I may have excessive soot in the oil. But after reading all of the posts in the various forums on this issue, I'm convinced it's simply a glitch in the system.

has anyone had a oil analysis done at the point when the light came on "prematurely" and you just reset it? not questioning your motives just curious as i think it is possible that Myguy 98 might be on to something with the excessive soot. It seems as though its not just set at intervals but it is a "smart" oil change light and determines the interval b/c of many things.

This is what I was told by the Dodge tech as well. That the OCI prompt is NOT just mileage based but uses different parameters such as driving type - alot of stop & go vs. highway, hours of service etc. Now on the NAV system I can set it to whatever mileage I want.
Probably a good idea to get an oil sample tested when the prompt comes on due to using the CJ4 low ash oil and possible soot contamination. I'm going to get a kit to do just that before the next change even though I have already decided my OCI would be @ 10k mostly highway miles. Have had 4 changes already. The first I got @ about 3k miles WITH a prompt but no prompt for the last 3 as I had it changed @ 10k mile intervals. Most likely the more highway miles you do the longer the OCI. I guess the "old school" method of doing things has changed with the new 6.7L.

Thanks for your help, guys. I'm not ging to worry about the oil at the moment. I'm in traveling mode with my fifth wheel in Montana. When I get to a location where I'll be at least a few days I'll get the oil changed anyway. I'll see if this will be a recurring situation in the future. If so, I'll just ignore the "Change oil" lamp and reset it.

As I mentioned, the oil doesn't appear very dark and there is no gritty feel to it. I realize that's not a scientific way to test the oil but I feel fairly comfortable with it for the time being.

Another glitch came up today. While towing my fifth wheel from Deer Lodge to Billings, MT the MIL came on. The truck still ran fine and a little later the MIL went off. I couldn't bring up any codes with the "key" method. When I'm near a dealer I'll have the truck checked for any codes. I only have about 3k miles on the truck now.

nothing to worry....they just want to be sure that you don"t wait 20.000k before changing your oil.....
