Can you clean a CAT Conv?

I got a 5.9 CAT that I'm gonna put on my truck. Can I clean it inside without damaging it? Should I even bother? It's only got like 12,000 miles on it. At least that's what the guy told me.....

I'd blow some compressed air through it, but that's bout all you can do unless you knock all the crap out of it, but then it ain't really a cat (or is it).

They are real easy to clean out. Just get a big pry bar and a big hammer. Hammer away until all the dirty white stuff is out and presto it's clean.
Why do you want to put on a cat? Doesn't the 6.7 have enough on it already?

You guys are funny. I don't want to clean it out that well!! LOL

I have pulled all the crap off my exhaust but I hate the way it sounds now. I am trying to make this truck sound closer to what my 07 5.9 sounded like. It had no muffler but it did still have the CAT in place. So I am experimenting with this. The 6.7 has a CAT but it's much smaller and it's in the downpipe which I pulled off. I did plan on the compressed air method but just wondered if there was a way that would do a bit more. I think it will be fine with just the air though. I'll just pull it off on occasion and blow it out again...

I am also doing this in the hopes of fooling and L.E.O. that may happen to look under the truck. I heard that trucks sound bad with just running hollowed out CATS too....

To be perfectly honest I don't think you need to waste your time cleaning it... You will give it a good shot of compressed air the first time you build any boost. And the heat along with that will do the trick.

You are probably right. Me being me though, I will have to hit it with the air just so I can see some black smoke coming out of it....

If it doesn't work like you like then try one of these muffs with no cat.

I use the twister race muffler

Dodgezilla, I don't think it is the exhaust that is making it sound like it does. It is the turbo. The Variable vane will muffle the sound a lot and unless you can get it to change there,,, like change the turbo,, you are kind of stuck with the sound. Trust me, I am wishing for a better sound myself.

I'm not even sure I will do it now that I spent the $$$ on it. I do still have to pull this DP off and hone it out some more so it fits tighter up against the turbo elbow. Once I finish that then I will look at the CAT idea again. I could just put the stock DP back on. It fits nice and tight and it already has a CAT in it.....

Dodgezilla;

As you know, I have Magnaflow 5” Turbo back, and had the terrible HISS out the tail pipe. It is real bad when the Exhaust Brake is engaged.
I called BADP, and they sold me a 5” SS Magnaflow Muffler.
This stopped 95% of the bad noise (HISS) It sounds great now. It took out the rumble at curtain RPM ranges as well, but left most of the deep tones. It is a little quitter, but not to much. I think for the 6.7, this is as good as it gets.

Well, that sounds promising. Mine has the same awful hiss especially with the EB on. I also get the drone at certain RPMs. I think if I can just quiet the truck down some then a lot of this will go away. I guess I will look at the CAT idea again...

Thanks guys and gal......

Have you thought of this thing? Certainly cheaper than a CAT.

You mentioned that you've heard some trucks with a hollowed out cat. Did those trucks have any other muffler on them or just a straight pipe and the hollow cat? Thats something that has often crossed my mind if I ever got an exhaust. I'm not going to straight pipe the truck but have thought about hollowing out the cat if I got a muffler. I'm leaning toward Hushpower.
