Can I tow 16K with this truck?

I have an 07.5 3500 MC DRW 4x4 with the 6 speed auto and the 3.73. My current 5th wheel is about 11K but am looking at upgrading to a larger 5th wheel. I know the payloads are low of the Megacabs and the GVWR is 10500 but the rear axle rating is 9350 this makes no sense. The Quad cab DRW have a GVWR of 12200 and much higher pay loads. The MC's are higher in weight but this truck should be able to tow 16K with a pin weight of 3000 IMO.

What are your thoughts?

no issues at all!! Don't sweat the numbers too much, you have plenty of tow capacity.

Can you or should you?

I'm pretty confident you can, but in the event of a catastrophic accident, I'm not sure of the legalities.
(I know, the "weight police" again, just saying.)

I tow fairly heavy from time to time, right up to and a little beyond the limit. I'm also VERY careful what I'm doing and where I am heading. Common sense goes a long way when it comes to safety.

Thanks for the help and keep the replies coming.

How much does that 40' hauler weigh and how much pin weight?

16K is nothing for these trucks. I tow 20K fairly regularly with my 32' G/N (dual tandem 10,000lbs. axles) with my '01 as does my father with his '05. We are both legal with TxDot, pass through the checkpoints all the time without issue. As long as the 5'er has the axles and brakes underneath it to support the weight, the pulling rig has no problem.

My friend has a Mega Cab LONG bed conversion. 4X4 dually that weighs 8500 lbs alone. Just bought a new 40 ft triple slide out toy hauler with a dry weight of 13800 lbs. Just got back from Lake Havasu and he said it pulled the hill coming up from the Colorado river at 55 with no effort at all. THe 6 speed auto makes a lot of difference.
