6.7L Slow Idle
6.7L Slow Idle
I have just bought a new '07 3500 SRW 6.7L 4X4 auto. I have noticed that it idles around 680 RPM when in drive and in park. When I put it in reverse it drops down to about 500 RPM and feels like the power steering pump is having trouble turning the wheels . Also when I am slowing down to stop at a light, RPM drops down to about 600 before it downshifts to the next gear to bring the RPM back up to idle speed. Is this normal? I read in the manual that idle is supposed to be between 700-800 RPM for the 6.7L. Does anyone have a 6.7L that behaves like this or have any suggestions?
Yeah I would take it to the dealer and let them adjust it. I normally idle around 800. you should get them to enable your High idle. It allows the oil to circulate better and you can adjust your idle up to 1500 rpm while the truck is in park. I dont know why the dont come enabled. Hope it all works out
when engine is running with trans in park push cruise on then push set. idle should go to 1100 rpm then use accel a few times to raise it about 100 rpm at a time or hold till 1500 rpm which is max. it is the same as using cruise when driving....chris
With my 04.5 I could engage the high idle in both Park & Neutral. The 07 6.7L will only engage the high idle in park. Is this something that can be changed by the tech with the scanner?? I noticed there were a bunch of options that can be enabled by the tech with the scanner while I was looking over his shoulder but didn't know what they all were.
Yeah that does it , works sweet. Don't understand why they don't come activated from Factory with instructions in the Owner's Manual? That's a nice feature for cold weather and I'll bet most owners don't know they have it on their truck.

I took my truck in to have them increase the idle speed. They said that they could not adjust the idle speed because it was a built in parameter. Is this true? Any suggestions? What RPM does any of your trucks run at when stopped in reverse?
Sorry Rrloren i didnt get back to you in time... but you got plenty of people to get you the right answer. You like it so far? I run around 800rpm in park... ill check it today in reverse and get back with you about that. It does seem strange that they cant make it idle higher though, but with all the restrictions on the new truck it wouldnt suprise me
Picked up my new ride 5 days ago, noticed the slow labored idle in reverse right away, but hey who idles in reverse that long anyway? Only other comment is HOLY %@#& ! ! !
I thought my '02 F-350, 7.3 factory high torque tuned was about as bad as they come hauling my 12K fifth wheel; hooked up the new ride over the weekend, right out of the box - 65 up hill and backing off the throttle ! ! The truck is awsome ! ! !

Ya, my truck pulls like a Semi, lots of power, and acceleration, loaded or unloaded, nothing slows this thing down. The only questionable thing about it is the slow idle.
Ship Fixer, What RPM does yours idle at in park?
