Slow starting and Idle

I have a 05 3500 that's all stock (for now). I've had it about a month now. 2 things stick out on this truck compared to the 01 and 02 Dodge Cummins I had. First, it takes way longer to start this engine than my 01-02's and I've noticed this on all stock 03 and up Dodges. The older trucks would start 'immediately', always. This truck has to actually crank for a while. Always starts, never a problem, just slow. What am I missing on this? What is going on to delay the engine now? Next thing is the idle. In cold weather after starting it will go into high idle and almost sounds like its missing. When I get back in and tap the throttle to drop back to normal everything is fine. I did try and do some searching for similar questions but there is sooo much on the site! Not a bad thing for sure! Any help would be appreciated. I'd love to be able to go back to that instant start again but I'm sure I just need to be 'educated' more! Thanks!

for your slow start, your batteries might be getting worn. i just replaced mine from the stockers and truck cranks noticably faster now. it wasnt delayed with the old batteries, but just a little faster now.

In cold weather your going to get some engine noise at startup and high idle. do this: after you truck gets to operating temp park it and manually put your truck into high idle (turn cruise on, then press set) this will manually bring your truck to 1000rpm. see if the noise is still there, if its not, then its just a cold engine noise.

Are you the original owner? How many miles? Mine now starts great and fast and no longer have the miss during high idle when cold. Just like it did when I bought the truck new. Mine had the same problems you described after a couple of years and got really bad with ULSD. Finally got the injectors tested and found they needed a rebuilt. Problem solved. May not be injectors but cured my issues for now.

Other tips, After you turn the key to the ON position, wait a couple second for the lift pump to prime the CP3 and it should start faster if you aren't doing that already. Also by design they should start slightly slower as you have to get over 6000 psi to start. vp and p pump don't have to hit that high to start.

Depends on how fast it is starting whether there is a problem. Normally, an auto will start on a 2-3 thousand count. The manuals just seem to take a bit longer, a 4-5 count if so. There is a flash for slow start on the manuals but its effectiveness is in question.

The CR's are never going to start like the jerk pump engines. The electronics simply take 2-3 revolutions to synch crank sensor and\or cam sensor to even let the ECU fire the injectors, whereas, a jerk pump will generally fire on the 1st or 2nd cylinder up.

If it is starting on a 2-5 thousand count operations are normal. Advancing the timing *MIGHT* make a difference but its not a given.
