wrong oil

Man...was doing my first oil change last night.

I put the first gallon in and then part of a second when I realized it was 10w-30 and not 10w-40 . I stopped and put the third gallon in which was 10w-40 though. Must be when I grabbed them off the shelf that the first one was 10w-40, but the ones behind it were 10w-30 and I didn't notice. I had my 4 yr old with me..what can ya say.

Should I swap it out ya think? Or just....

Welcome to DTR

Oil should be thicker than 10W-40. These are diesel engines not gas burners. 15w-40 is the norm for winter, some guys run 20w-50 in the summer.

Is this oil rated for diesel engines?

Mixing them is not a good idea, but if they are the same brand I would leave it for 3,000 miles and change it to a better, heavier, diesel rated oil.

Probably will not hurt to run the oil for a short time if the engine is not worked hard, but for my peace of mind I would chage it out as soon as possible.

^ X 2 ^ Especially if it is not diesel rated oil. There are a lot more detergents in diesel oil.

Agreed. YOu MUST run 15/40 rated oil and it MUST be CI-4 rated minimum. SOme are CI4+ which is fine, and CJ oils are now fine. You can also run synthetic 5-40 if you live in a colder climate.. I wouldn't drive that truck very much. Depending on the mileage I might do an engine flush first as well...

Don't know about the 07 owners manual but in my 06 it doesn't say you can only run synthetic 5w40 in the colder climates. Synthetic 5w40 can be used year round with out any problems or they would print some thing in the owners manual along the lines of to only use 5w40 in the wintertime when the temps gets down to or below zero or what ever number they were to use. BTW I've read post from people who live in SO Cal who use Amsoil 5w30 HDD year round with out any problems and their temps get in to the 100+ degree range.

My $0.02

Gotta get that Amsoil plug in DBLR? You are like a walking infomercial with 5w30 diesel Amsoil.

Oh no, you put grocery store oil in it. No big deal. Just drain it and put in some 15W40 diesel rated oil. Valvoline Premium blue, Rotella, Delo400 it will be fine.

I'm assuming you have the 5.9 and not the 6.7 CTD.

If so, you might want to check the API spec donut on the back of the bottle to ensure you are filling with either CI-4+ or CJ4 formulated oil (made for diesels).
