Why Such a Small Turbo on 3rd gen?

My 2002 HO has a 16 cm^2 turbo to make it's 245 HP. Why did Dodge (Cummins?) go to such a teeny turbo as a 9 or 10 (whichever it is) cm^2 to do 300+ HP?

If I'm not going to bomb, is there any downside to the smaller turbo?

Thanks,
Tad

A smaller turbo usually spools up at lower RPMs and is more efficient.

The only disadvantage is if you are trying to make big HP, the small turbo will limit you in terms of power and EGTs/

What are the options for a bigger turbo on 3rd gens? AND IS IT ALOT OF WORK TO CHANGE? CAN THE WASTE-GATE BE ADJUSTED TO GIVE MORE BOOST?.

There are a few companies that offer turbo upgrades. The boost can be adjusted with a "boost elbow."

1) Actually your 02 had a 12cm turbine housing on an HX35 compressor. Definitely a bit larger turbo, probably too big for the 245 horspower, since we were able to generate 340 - 350 relatively efficiently with the HX35/12

2) No. The HY35/9 on these trucks is very well matched to the power. Free up the air a bit to stop starvation, and you've got a well tuned truck.

Rod,

ISB's were a different animal than the 3rd Gens.
With higher injection pressures these days, you can utilize more of the fuel for making power.

Oh for sure, but they still could have easily gotten away with a HY35/9 on the 245 engine. Even allowing 4 more PSI (to a max of 22) would have kept the HY _well_ within its MAP, and made for a more efficient engine.

Its a good thing they didn't do that though, otherwise the turbo would have needed replacing earlier
