ABS/Brake light

On my 03, 6 spd my Brake/ABS lights are still coming on every once in a while. It did it last night while I was sitting still. Cut the truck off and right back on and it cleared and did not come on again. I tried watching the speedometer to see if it was fluctuating, and did not see it jump around. The dealer can't figure out what is causing this, cause it never has any codes as to what is wrong. I am thinking about going ahead and replacing the speed sensor in the top of the rear axle to see if it fixes the problem??????????????????????????????????

Re:ABS/Brake light

I was up hunting today and had to go through some deep snow. After sticking the truck and finally getting it out with some chains. More of a problem with the stock tires than the amount of snow. My brake light and ABS light stayed on. They turned off after about of mile of driving. What's up with this speed sensor stuff? ???Did some wires just get wet?

405, maybe you had some snow/ice lodged in by the sensor(s) when you were stuck, and it needed some driving time to warm up and melt it away.

Depending on when your truck was built you may need to have the TSB for the "check gauges" light. My ABS/Brake light used to come on on a whim, but since I had the TSB done for the "check gauges" light, the ABS/Brake only comes on when I start the truck.

Re:ABS/Brake light

Sometime after washing mine the light comes on and goes off after driving a little and things dry up....I don't believe there is any brake problems.

My Dodge van light came on...it was a sensor bad....brakes were fine.

Drive on!

I was doing a search on ABS for something else and found this post. It's very possible that if you packed snow in the wheels, the sensors weren't reading properly. Just a thought really. The vehicle has three wheel speed sensors. One on the rear axle and one on each front wheel.

Bradly, next time the light comes on, have it scanned before you shut it off. There will be a code showing, but shutting the truck off will erase it. Goodluck.

I was under the impression that if a fault did occur in the ABS system then a code will be logged. Don't bother trying to "guess" which sensor is bad (if one actually is) Your dealer will have software to test the systems. Most of the time an intermittent light on is dirt/snow/air gap at the wheel sensors. On older vehicles the tone ring can crack, causing a bad reading. The sensors can also be check for shorts to ground, opens, and ohms by a qualified tech.
