Why High Idle Enable?

I remember reading about this a while back.

What is the long and short of this mod?

1. Why do you do it?
2. In what circumstances?
3. Automatically or to treat a problem?

I'll be getting my new '06 in a couple weeks and wondering if I should have the dealer do this.

TIA

Reason for the high idle is so you don't end up idleing (at idle) for extended periods (bad).

It's nice for winter weather also, where you really don't want to idle the truck for long.

So a search, there is a lot of information here on the topic.

Even though prolonged idling is now illegal in some places (like here in MD), some folks like to idle up the engine in the winter to help with warm up (or to keep it warm) and prevent wet-stacking; and in the summer heat to permit the AC to work better in a stationary vehicle.

On the 3rd gens, this function was available only on the automatic tranny trucks and N/A for the stick shifts. But I've seen where there is a fix for stick shift vehicles '05 and newer.

Personally, I've used a piece of molding between the seat and gas pedal with great success to keep the rev's up.

Wow, hadn't heard that one?!

What is considered "prolonged"? Wonder if it is an enviromental thing or because of the nuisance?

I think it was a combination of the environmental pollution issues and the waste of natural resources.

I don't know of anyone that was written a citation for idling, but it was in the papers early last winter. Gotta love Merryland, huh? Maybe it is county by county, I dunno.

It will also help you cool down the EGT's a little quicker after extended or loaded runs once you put it in Park and set the high idle at 1000-1100 rpm.

I use the high idle feature only for cold climates. I work all over the state sometimes in harsh conditions.
