Talking Helped dealer enable high idle today (Thanks to Phox)

First, Thanks to Phox Mulder's thread I was able to walk the dealer through enabling my high idle today. This is what happened.

Printed out TSB 18-019-01 provided by Phox from a previous thread. Took that with me to the dealer. I then asked the service writer to enable the high idle feature. When I tried to give him the TSB, he just wrote down the number and told me to keep it. I shrugged and said ok. He came back a few minutes later and said that I would need the newest "flash" for my ECM to have this feature. I politely told him that I wouldn't need the new flash and all that needed to be done is for the service tech to enable the feature with the scan tool. He didn't believe me and said that I needed the flash. I said sure then try and see. Sure enough about five minutes later he came back and said that I already had the newest version of DC software on the truck and that my high idle was already enabled from the factory. I told him that is funny since it doesn't work AND the TSB says you have to enable it. So, he read through the TSB and agreed. He got the service tech to take the scan tool back to the truck. This time I followed and sure enough the service tech never heard of this option. He was aware of it on the 3rd generation trucks but not on the 2nd generation trucks. Anyway, he let my look at the scan tool and I found for him the 3.3 Cylinder Idle option and helped him enable it. He said he never knew what that was for. So when you go to the dealership and ask for the high idle to be enabled....ask for the 3.3 Cylinder Idle Option to be enabled on an 02 2500. The guy with the tool can find that. If he is just looking for an High Idle Option with the tool then he won't find it.

Hope it works. I made sure he did the cycle on and off with the keys (with the scan tool hooked up). We went back to the 3.3 cylinder option and this time it said enabled and the only option was to disable...so it's enabled.

I have to give credit to the service writer. Once he realized that I knew my info and proved him wrong, he didn't hesitate to make sure it was done and for FREE

Thanks again DTR. Without this forum to arm us with information we would all be at the mercy of the dealership.

Bob

Good story, sounds like you have a reasonable dealer!

Now, when is it going to actaully become Winter in Maryland for you to get to see it idle up??

Wish my Dealership and Service Manager would have been that nice and charged me nothing for doing their job for them.

Glad it worked out for you.

Thanks guys.

P.J. 32.8 degrees here in Gunpowder this morning. It wasn't cold enough for it to work. Hopefully winter will come sometime soon. I am really looking forward to some serious snow.

Close though Huh? Weather Man said this morning we're heading back up into the 50's towards the end of the week.
We had about 34.2*, I'm only about a mile from the Elk River so we are usually a little warmer.
I remember it being bitter last winter quite a few times. I've heard some commnents on the 3.3 cyl. thing,(really cold) people claim it sounds like shaking a box of rocks.

Thursday is supposed to be a low of 23. I will try again then. I just hope the enablement took. I've heard how it takes two or three tries to get it right.

I am interested to see how the 3.3 cylinder idle sounds. Come on winter!

I had the exact same thing happen. i took my truck in to get the feature enabled and the dummies told me they couldn't because it didn't exist, and my truck "already had the latest software version installed". I left w/o getting it done , but they didn't charge me anything.

Barry Smith:

Yes, you will have to get a reflash per TSB 18-019-01 (1998.5-2002 models). Here is a link to the TSB. Give this number to your service people and cross your fingers.

36.8 degrees here in Gunpowder. Not cold enough to see if mine works yet.

I asume your talking about the high idle cruise feature. You do have to get the updated flash or it will not work. I had mine in twice because they enabled it and it would not work then I had to take it back and they updated it and got it working. BTW this feature will work in any temp.

......and you know what they say about "assume". We're talking about 2nd gen VP equipped trucks. That said, the only time my 3 cyl has come on was when we went to Idaho a couple years ago. -17 made it kick it.

On the newer models you can ramp up the idle by turning the cruise control on while in park and then pressing the "Accel" button to adjust the idle.

Very cool feature, a shame they hadn't figured it out on our year trucks.
