When Should air filter be replaced

Mine has about 20K miles on it but the air restriction gage is wide open. Should I replace for good measure, or leave it be? Last time I replaced it my milage jumped up by 1 to 2 mpg, but the air restriction gage was half way down.

I would just change it. I would assume it looks pretty bad right? When in doubt throw it out. I am on my 3rd filter now @ 20k. Usually bugs in summer & dusty (salt ) in winter on my filters.

By 15k miles I have lost several pounds of boost due to the restrictive filter. So that's when I change it.
BTW, my next filter will be the reusable Amsoil Ea dry filter.

Dealer told me, mine was bad at my 12k oil change. I was like BAH!! trying to sell me junk. Changed the fuel filter at 15k and looked at that air filter.. OMG was it NASTY! Even had to actually reset the indicator. It was RED!

Just change it when it gets dirty.) Don;t worry about miles.

Those indicators are about as accurate as the MPG overhead....I am changing mine at 12k and its fairly dirty. My indicator has not moved a bit!

Def. change it.
Depending on the conditions where you drive such as high dust/dirt the more frequent you need to change.
Do not rely solely on the air res. indicator.

The Air Cleaner indicator is kind of a joke. My CTD has 3500 miles on it and it goes half way to red everytime I check it (I check under the hood at each fill up) ever since I installed my Edge Juice. LOL. If I followed that indicator I would have to change my Air Filter with each fill up! Pretty much I will change the air filter along with the oil and fuel filter.
