what is the smell?

Why do these new trucks smell so bad, like propane, not diesel? Is it the converter?, because my friend has a 03 dmax and his smells like a diesel, didnt they have converters? Will taking it off help it smell like a diesel?? or not??? WHATS UP?

Mine stunk for awhile too. I thought I saw something about it being the cat as well. Not sure how many miles you have but mines around 6500 and the smell is totally gone. Dont take it off just b/c of the smell, unless for health reasons i suppose. The penalities for being caught w/o it can be steep.

A strange smell is omitted by the "burning in" of the coating they spray on the engine. After a few thousand miles...my "propane like" smell disapeared.

I experienced an odor that smelled like acetone or other solvent. On this forum I learned it was crank case fumes, which my dealer later confirmed. There is a TSB on the subject and the solution is a fuel additive that will give it a perfume smell--the last thing any good All American truck guy wants.

Ahhh, these must be the new emmissions standards. The government says it is better and cleaner. Remember, BIG BROTHER Knows best!!!!
Put some miles on it and maybe pull a trailer and see if it clears up before attacking it.

Mine had an odd smell until the first oil change. Saw on this board where the factory oil gives a strange smell.

Ever notice the inside of your windsheild on new vehicles? That film is caused by vapors coming from the new materials used in the interior, and you are breathing it! The EPA will be doing vehicle interior air quality checks next!

And people wonder why Americans have cancer at a greater occurance than other countries.

Wanna sell me your new truck?

I have the same smell as you do. Not all that exciting to drive a truck that smells like a clark fork lift. No smoke and no smell along with a trail of white vapor when I take off in the morning leads me to think that it is the cat. Mine also had all the other smells mentioned here but none of those smelled like propane. Now that I have 6K miles on it, I get a real quick smell of diesel smoke as soon as I start it but as soon as the cat warms up it's gone. This spring, my truck is donating a cat to help with the rodent problem I have in my garage.

I have the same smells as every one else, I was told that I could not remove the cat because emmission laws, and I would not be able to get it inspected.
