oil smell

I mistakenly posted this in the 24 valve forum...

My father-in-law just took ownership of a 2003 dually with the new Cummins. I have it for the week (one hell of a truck I must say) to outfit it. I have noticed that there is a subtle smell of oil at stop lights. The truck only has 460 miles and we were both thinking that the smell may be due to the engine breaking in. Does anyone have any ideas? ???

Re:oil smell

Here is what another fellow offered as a solution to this problem on another site:

"I extended the blowby tube on the ’03 about one foot straight down to get the exit below the bottom of the engine oil pan using one hose clamp and piece of 3/4 I.D. hydraulic return hose. I haven’t noticed the blowby odor since doing that a month ago. Seems like the factory would notice that odor when they drive a new truck too?"

Also, you can stop it temporarily by changing your heat/vent switch to either of the bottom two settings which closes off the outside vents. HTH
