weak lift pump 2003 cummins
weak lift pump 2003 cummins
I installed a 3 micron filtre system from bd power and the 5 psi low fuel protection light While driving around all is good until I pulled my boat . now the light gives a quick blink when I throttle up.Added a gauge to the system and found I,m only getting 10 to 11 psi while idling or driving. When I step on it pressure drops to 5 psi for a second.Does anyone know what the lift pump in the tank pushes(psi) and whats the best fix?? Any suggestions would be great
Man, the best fix is to get rid if that crappy little pump and get an Air Dog or Raptor...
As long as you have positive pressure at WOT, you'll be ok, just keep an eye on that fuel pressure. That pump runs at a steady flow the whole time, so you're not straining the lift pump by making the pressure drop.

If it's the original lift pump you can find exact replacement but I wouldn't use it. I had an in-tank pump put in when my original pump crapped out. Bad design by Dodge (Cummins didn't like it but couldn't get dodge to change). A lift pump should have a short lift and a longer push. Orig equip was just the opposite.
I would not. The OEM pumps are not a flow through design, and if the OEM pump takes a crap, the second pump won't be able to get fuel through it.
Why would you want to do that anyway?
The aftermarket pumps flow plenty on their own.

I agree! A Raptor along the frame would be a good solution.

I ordered a flow max lift pump for on the frame rail and retro kit for in the tank with 5 yr warranty out of Abbotsford Looked at raptor but In need it by wed so time is a issue. Think I will just cut a access hole in the box instead of dropping the fuel tank this should make things easier for now and future.
3 hrs to install new frame rail pump and strainer no more light coming on alls kinda good.At a stop sign sometimes when I step on the pedal it hesitates but not all the time anyone have any ideas ? Whats next
Huh? Next to the oil filter? I've never seen that...
On the 03's to 04.5's, the lift pump was mounted on the fuel filter canister.
Get a pusher pump, your choice, and remove the canister mounted pump.
Call me if you have questions. I've done a lot of these. Just remember I'm on the west coast, don't call me at 7 east coast time.
