Valve Adjustments?

Hi - I'm on the way to purchasing a 2004.5 CTD 4x4. Do these CTD's need valve adjustments?

1) If so, how often do they require it?

2) How do you know when they need to be adjusted?

3) How difficult is it going to adjust them, or is this something the dealer must do? If so, how much does it cost?

THANKS !!!

150,000 miles for first adjustment.

Yes, first routine adjustment is at 150,000 miles. There are many factors that should be taken into account as to whether to adjust them sooner. Adding aftermarket goodies or prolonged heavy towing could shorten that down a bit.

Can be done in your driveway in 2 hours or less.

Valve adjustments are easy. I would recommend doing it LONG before 150k if you really want to keep your motor running at peak performance and smoothness. I suggest first check at 50k.

I agree with Vaughn. I think 150k is way to long for valve adjustments. I'm going to check mine at 30k.

I have 39,000 on my truck right know, with a banks six gun. I pull a trailer every day (5000-10000 lbs ). What would be a sign that they need to be adjusted. The truck ticks alot when cold and at idle.

The below is what I just pulled off the Dodge Ram site at cummins.com

When should I adjust the valves?

For the 12-valve engine in the Dodge Ram, the valves should be adjusted initially at 24,000 miles and thereafter every 48,000 miles. For the 24-valve engine in the Dodge Ram, the initial valve adjustment should be completed at 150,000 miles.

On EDIT: here it is a second time from the same source.

What maintenance is required with the 24-Valve Turbo Diesel?

The only maintenance required is regular replacement of oil and oil filters at 7,500 miles and fuel filter replacement at 15,000 miles. The air filter should be replaced when the "Filter Minder" installed on the air cleaner box indicates a dirty filter. Valve adjustment is not required until 150,000 miles.

I have ALSO told folkes it was at 150k.I was talking to the service advisor at the DEALER I deal with and he said YOU SURE.I said about 100%.He went and got the SERVICE MANUAL and it STATES NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED! Not saying I wont do mine but its in PRINT and stated from 2000 UP 24 valve engines. He said HE thought He had been asked that before and remembered something going by him about that issue.Sure enough its in the manual.

What it should say is "NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED because afterall, the warranty is over at 100K and we just don't give a crap after that"
