Used 1QT. oil in 3900 miles.
My 07 5.9 CTD with 3900 miles on it is down 1 quart of engine oil since new.Is this O.K. or should I be concerned?
since it has only 3900 miles on it- did you check it when you bought it?? was it full then??? if so, consuming 1qt of oil in such a small amount of time does not sound right. i go 20,000 miles between changes. my oil is alway right around the full mark on the dip stick.
If the truck is not sitting on level ground or you check the oil too soon after shutting it down it will read low. Also these engines need to be worked hard to be broken in properly. Pulling a trailer is best. Mine was using about a quart in 5000 miles until I took it on a long trip with the 5th wheel RV. I worked it hard on the hills. Oil consumption is much improved.

Thanks for the quick replies.I check oil level in my garage every couple of days. Most of my driving is highway (about 85 miles daily) at 60-65 mph.Only towed trailer once for about 240 miles.Maybe piston rings need to seat more?
Let the engine break in.
The CTD has a reputation for losing oil when new.
You'll see oil consumption drop off to almost nothing as the engine breaks in. The best thing you can do to speed that along is USE the truck and USE IT HARD. Find a heavy trailer, practice your ditch recovery techniques on willing friends, etc. Warm it, load it up and let it get cozy with the loud pedal.
If it still consumes oil with a "scientific" check of the oil level after about 12K miles, then you may have something to address-- likely a leak.

Don't worry my friend, break it in good and you should have a great
ctd engine. That being said, it is not uncommon for any diesel to use oil. That's why on M.Benz diesels, on fuel door, it says check oil every time. I think the other guys are right, your rings have not seated yet.
