Unknown Tune Questions

I just bought an 04 yesterday and absolutely love it.
Today while driving around town, I noticed that she leaves a small smoke trail even with moderate acceleration. I'm pretty sure that this doesn't happen stock, so I think it has some tune.
Is there any way to determine what has been done?
I am new to these computers on wheels (see first truck) so I'm not sure what these programmers can and can't do.
I wanted to get a Smarty in the near future due to the praise it gets on this site. If I hook it up to my truck, can it deprogram the truck so I can start over with what I got?
I little insight into these things would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't say the truck has been tinkered with. Mine stayed stock until it had over 50k on it and it would smoke just enough to tell it was a diesel just like yours. The more miles it got on it the easier it was to make it smoke.

Oh ok. That would make sense because it still has the stock intake and exhaust. No sign of prior gauges either.

If that's the case...HOLY CRAP these things are powerful stock!

When I get used to it, I plan on a Smarty or Smarty Jr. Oh the fun that will be had.

to ease your mind and make buying things for it easier, climb under the hood and find the sticker onthe drivers side of the "valve cover" and read the rated hp output of the motor, 305 or 325. this will make a fair difference in what fits and works, and what doesn't.

I just bought mine Friday and took it to the dealer today to have them flash it back to stock and they said they couldn't and the ECM would have to be replaced, is this true?

The first thing I noticed was it doesn't run smooth like my 02 did, it knocks, pings, and hammers like the timing has been turned up. The second thing I noticed was the AVG MPG readout on the overhead display shows 29.8 MPG. The third thing I noticed was the smoke, it will lay down a pretty good cloud if you stand on it when you take off from a light.

It says 325 HP.
What is the torque for this motor?
Does this mean it's an 04.5?

If the dealer can't re-flash it, then it's been tuned. Since you do'nt have the tuner, you will probably have to replace the ECM. If you can find one new, expect to pay around $1,000-1,500. If you can find one.

OTOH, there's a couple of companies in the US that refurbish factory ECM's. I bought one for my Dakota at about half price. I would try that first. Here's one on e-bay for $725.

Sweeeet! No wonder!
I guess I'll have to change my sig now. Mine must be an early 04.5 because she was built in 4/04.
