transmission fluid

I am going to be some servicing to my trans soon and was wondering whats the best stuff to put back in? Are synthetics like amsoil good but then i would need to flush everything out for this correct and if i was to do it this myself where you disconnect the trans cooler how many quarts would i need?

Or is it better to just replace the fluid you took out of the pan when dropped?

Fluid has to be compatible with ATF+4. Mopars is already a full synthetic, pick it up at Wal-Mart, about half what the dealer charges. All you need to do is drop/ clean the pan and magnet, change the filter, and adjust the bands. I never serviced the transmission, always had the dealer do it, so I couldn't tell you how to adjust the bands. Maybe search on it.

06RAM2500,

Mopar ATF is not full synthetic its made form group III crude oil.

itr.#1446,

If a person wants to use Amsoil synthetic ATF they don't need to flush out all of the old fluid, I know as when I did mine I just replaced the filter and refilled with Amsoil and have not had any problems in over 20K. FYI to just replace the filter and refill you will need around 6-7 qt's of ATF.

amsoils website says that the 48re has a 17quart capacity.-so if you only dump in 6-7quarts of amsoil-wouldn't you be diluting the good stuff quite a bit?

that's what i am curious if i should just flush the whole thing and add synthetic but at the same time i don't have a lot of money to be spending so i might just keep mopar stuff in there until the i can afford to flush the whole thing with synthetic.

i am changing the filter while i am in there and thank you for the link

I'd keep ATF+4 in it, especially if you're still in the 7-70 powertrain warranty period.

Most shops don't recommend doing a flush as it stirs up all the junk inside the transmission. You only need to drop the pan and replace the filter, fluid and clean the pan.

When I switched to Amsoil ATF...we just dropped the pan, changed the filter, adjusted the bands, and refilled with about 8 quarts of fluid. Very simple procedure and no issues with just dropping pan and refilling...

(Quote) Mopar ATF is not full synthetic its made from group III crude oil. (quote)

that is not correct. I have a bottle of Mopar atf+4 in my hand and it clearly states on the label that it is "fully synthetic". if it had any petroleum products in it, it would say "synthetic blend". $4.64 at wallmart. they also have "supertech" atf+4 which is also fully synthetic for $3.77 which is probably also just fine but for the extra 90cents a quart I figured I would rather the peace of mind of knowing I'm not installing cheapy swill fluid in my 40K truck

Agreed, but...

...you can do a "fluid exchange" without stirring up the junk. Just remove the rear tranny line, start the engine long enough to let it fill a gallon jug, add a fresh 4qts to the tranny, repeat 4x.

That's what I did for my 60k service. Good as new!

I used a garden hose and a normal radiator clamp, the return line is the rear one, and you should get 17-18 qts but you'll probably use 16 (you can use the extra two for the transfer case).

Here's a write-up that works:

Pretty much a piece of cake, just slow down, take your time and follow each step carefully (I nearly forgot to tighten my filter fasteners because I took a break to eat dinner).
