Transfer Case Shot @ 108,000

This sucks ! Have never abused the truck in 4 wheel drive. Are they just that weak ? Have owned a bunch of 4x4's ( first Dodge ) and never had issues.....

What exactly went wrong for it to be "shot"?

Just changed my transfer case fluid at 67000 miles and it was pretty black. Doubt it had been changed before. Mine took about 2.5 quarts.

Did you ever change the fluid?

I am running Amsoil ATF in my truck's tcase.

The stock fluid was also very dark.

I also flushed out the old fluid by draining out the old fluid and pouring through 2 quarts with the drain plug open, to flush out any contaminents or particles

Sounds like the chain is jumping sprocket teeth when under a load. Have not opened it up yet. Sound was so loud, I was worried parts might start flying through the case.

Shop says go with a rebulit one cause it has the 3 yr warranty rather than reworking mine. Total = $ 1,400 installed

What do yall think ?

( yes, fluid was changed as scheduled )

So the loud stripping teeth sound I heard this morning on my 2003 3500 dually when I put it under a load in 4 wheel is the chain shot?
Can you run it in two wheel drive or will parts start falling off?
I need to use the truck for the next three weeks but no 4x4
Thanks For the input!

Case model says 271 D

been running mine for the last two days with no problems. it makes no noise until 4x4 engaged. Mech said chain & sprocket, have not opened it up. From the sound, its probably a lot messed up.

couldn't be without the truck right now, so I have not open the case.

When I went through my tranny problems , the last place that worked on it drained the fluid out of my transfer case , and apparenty never filled it back up....I never found that out untill ALMOST 1 YEAR later.
I knew the truck had a driveline thump in it when I got it back , but no one would believe me , and tried to blame any noise I was hearing on the susp. lift/tires and wheels

Anyway , the last shop (friend of mine ownes it) willing to help me out decided to put it in the air and try 4WD , which I never really use lately , and it made all kinds of funny noises. The tech. took a small bottle and was going to drain some of the fluid out into it. I told him he was about to get a bath in fluid , and much to our surprise NOTHING came out

I know for a FACT that no one had touched the transer case since the tranny was re-installed , so I contacted the shop. The were sceptical at first , but then said anything`s possible. They ended up replacing it with a used one I picked up for $350 from the recycling yard we use at work, and everything`s been fine ever since

Soooo, I`d say these things are pretty bullet proof
