I'll be honest with you...if you're making the trade to get into a 4-door or a 4x4 truck, go for it. If you're making the trade to get into the new engine, well, I still regret trading my '02. The older engines had a different character to 'em. The CR runs smooth, idles smooth, pulls strong, runs quiet, but the older engines just seemed to be mechanically unstoppable. I can't really put it into words. I like the functionality of my '04.5, but I miss the soul of my '02. I know it was slower, and the frame flexed, and the dash squeaked, and the VP44 would eventually die, but it was a LOT more fun to drive. Sometimes new and improved isn't always better. My 2 cents.

Same goes for my truck, my dad has an 05, quiet, smooth, fast. Mine has some character to it. You can REALLY hear the turbo at idle through the exhaust and under WOT... and it just sounds like a "man's" engine... especially when you first start it and it catches, there is that initial rev that just sounds good...
I love it going through the drive through, they are "like, man that motor is loud!!", all I say is "yup", smile and drive off...

My current truck is a 2007 Quad-cab 3500 4x4 (one of the last 5.9's) Great power, quiet, comfy, & reliable. But it does lack that "character" of the 2nd gen truck.

I absolutely LOVE my 2006, it's a solid truck, can do the work I ask of it with plenty of power to spare. It does run smooth, it does idle smooth, it does pull strong, mine runs a little noisier since I did the ME but it also has lower EGT's as a result.
I got rid of an older truck, parts were becoming problematic, just getting too old and more and more expensive to do repairs. There is a point in time where they DO become mechanically stoppable - the wallet starts to complain about the constant drain.
I think the handshaker IS more fun to drive over an auto, but then I tow a lot and like rowing gears.
If you go to the 2006, you will probably see some big differences, and they will seem to you to be quite different, but as time goes by you will probably really get into the new truck. Or at least that has been my experience. Everyone's a little different about this stuff. My 2006 is a really reliable truck.

Miss the 2nd Gen
I agree with the above - I get nostalgic whenever I hear a 2nd Gen drive by. My 99 was loud, less refined, and paid for. That being said, the rug rats sure fit into the mega cab better. Compromises...
