Toyo AT or Nitto Terra Grapplers

Okay so i been doing tons of reading and i was looking at the toyo MT, but with the fuel prices going up i been considering goin with The AT's. I need something around about 35 inches tall cause i need the RPM reduction of the taller tires at highway speed. So the only 325 70 R17 that i can find in a all terrain is the toyo open country at's and the nitto terra grappler. i also seen that the load range is d on those.... but they are both 3 ply sidewalls and they are rated for 3305 lbs per tire... is that weight rating enough? my current tires are only rated for 2600 lbs per tire an with 50 PSI in them they look low. that also causes a lot of rolling resistance. i am trying to get away from that, hoping to bring my mileage up... with my current tires im only getting about 14-15 mpg. any body running either of these tires and what do you think about them???

Thumbs up

I run the Nittos TGs but in a 295/70. This is my second set of them and I really like them. I would consider them a very good tire.

Yes--put them on last week! Took off the POS KTM2 which really start to suck the fuel when they wear a little and they roar louder than the MTR's even (also tore a sidewall at the ranch last fall -- love the Discount Tire replacement guarantee))! Have had the Terra Grabbers on a couple of trucks in the past and they roll so much easier than the BFG's you can feel it on every road. Will see with the 325's on how they wear but I did have to trim a little metal and the fender flares on the driver’s side. They were just a little bigger than the 35x12.50 BFG KTM'2s.

So far exceed my expectations plus had them road force balanced---2 of the tires took less than 2oz after the tire was moved on the rim per the puters suggestion!! The other 2 took 3.25 and 3.75 oz but it is almost as smooth as my SLK55 and that is no BS..

I have the same. Love the looks but am not getting any wear out of them. Running 60 psi, 10k miles on them and over half way gonzo.

Same here. I'm currently shopping for new tires with only 19,xxx on the Nittos. Thats with 3000 miles rotations and driving like a grandpa.

They are super sticky though. I love the wet/snow traction. I'd gladly trade a bit of traction for a bit longer life.

Toyo makes a 285/75/17 that measures 33.8" x11.5". They also make a 285/75/18 that measures 34.8" x 11.5". Both are E rated. I test drove a truck with a leveling kit, Bilsteins, and the 285/75/18 tires, it rode great. Narrower tires will have less rolling resistance, so should give better fuel economy than the 325's will.

Having had the taco grabbers on a half ton truck, I'm not a fan of the Nitto tires.

I was actually looking at some Toyo Open Country H/T or A/T in 275/70/18 (33.1"x11") tires for mine, figuring the tall narrower highway pattern would yield the best fuel economy. This is the stock size for the new F-250's. It is somewhat dependent on what 18" wheels would cost.

When I was working in Puerto rico, we talked the company into putting Terra Gapplers on our trucks.
The trucks were beat and they road like new with these tires and they held up GREAT! No more "i had only four flats today" days!!!

I've ran 45,000 miles on my Nitto 295/70/17's and they are wearing excellent. I keep them aired to the max psi. and rotate every 6K miles. I am going to the Load range E Toyos next. 285/75/17's.

I'm jealous! Maybe I should bump up on the pressure.

I have about 10k on the Toyo ATs. It appears I'll get at least 40k out of them.

I am sure that road conditions and or road type have alot to do with the tire wear issue. I should add that I only do on road driving. 70% highway 30% city and these are all on paved roads. I am surprised at these Nittos though. I have alot of other buddies that have them and don't like em, but they are on duramaxes. I dunno?

I will say the Nittos wont wear like some others, thats just a fact. But they are a great tire for traction in wet or dry. I have had zero problems with any of the Nittos I have owned, and these follow suit. I havent run the Toyos, so I cant give a first hand comparison. I got the Nittos for a lot cheaper than the Toyos, so that swayed my decision.
