i believe the tc lockup is controlled electroically

my locks up at 28mph in 2nd and 48mph in 3rd

are there any programs that will get the converter to lockup sooner

or do they have anything where i can control the lockup myself

my truck is stock

the lockup in 2nd is ok but i would would like to change it to lock up sooner in 3rd

The only thing that I don't like when the tq converter locks up in 2nd at 20-30 mph is under very lite throttle there is a very loud "clunk" sometimes. Not to highjack the thread, but if anybody knows how to stop this please chime in. Now back to your question. Someone on here hooked up a switch to control the lockup manually. If you do a search on here you will find out how to do it.

I don't want to start a war here, but I do know SP diesel has a converter lockup controller. You should give them a call and ask about it because I'm sure it is still to new to post on the website.

They lockup in 2nd and 3rd only when in tow/haul mode. Otherwise its 4th only.

mine is an 03 and the way i get it to lock in 2nd and 3rd is to shift it manually on the coloumn

the 03 does not have the tow/haul mode

After searching many posts, this seems to be the most likely candidate for my question(s) ......
I do most of my 18 mile commute between home and work on 45 to 50 mph roads! So, I end up just short of the speed in which my trans eventually locks up its torqe converter, seems to be about 52 mph with my size 295 Nitos, with the Smarty correction. (was about 50 with the stock tires)
Now that I've got a trans temp guage, I'm even more concerned about getting in locked up overdrive sooner. About 30 degrees cooler!

When it does lock up, I can slow back down to almost 42- 43 mph while keeping it locked up....especially with the cruise control.

So, my question, is this about the normal speed for the rest of you?
Is there any way to get it into OD lock sooner?

Chuck

In regular mode on a 03-04 truck = 1 - 2 - 3 - lockup - unlock then shift to 4 - lockup.
T/H mode or OD off = 1 - 2 - 3 - lockup.
You can control shifts manually with lever in T/H mode = 1 - shift to second - 2 - lockup - shift to third - 3 - lockup.
You can also use the shift pattern in backwards pattern slowing down for engine brakeing effect.

The 05 trucks will do the same only they do not have a OD off position.

The 06 trucks will do the same thing as a 03-04 truck except they have a OD off position and T/H mode.
OD off = 1 - 2 - 3 - lockup.
T/H = 1 - 2 - 3 - lockup - unlock shift to 4 - lockup.
T/H manually control shifts with lever = 1 - shift to second - 2 - lockup - manual shift to third - 3 - lockup - manual shift to 4th - 4 - lockup.
You can also use the shift pattern in backwards pattern slowing down for engine brakeing effect.

Now my brain is mush, hope some one can understand the patterns.

Good explanation Bluebull, Thats just how they work. With the 06 being the best to date. Hopefuly the new 68re will be better yet. Not to many people know how to run a auto. They just let it do its thing and then wonder why they burn out. You gotta drive the truck, keep trans in the right gear for the situation and torque converter locked .

...clarify this for me...('06)

If I'm in T/H mode, I can manually shift to "2" and it will lock-up in 2nd? This will be handy on those long steep grades towing 12k.

You are correct, but.
If increasing speed will work as described, lockup at appropriate speed.
If decreasing speed you will have to shift to 2nd manually then blip the throttle to get it to lock. It will unlock automatically when speeds get low enough, I think around 22 MPH.
