They are VIN locked, so while it may not have to be a dealer per say, it will need to be someone who has access to a starscan.

I'm having the same issue. Don't understand how tipm off another 06 can work if they are locked. I used one off a friends for a weekend trip with no probs. Gonna try having mine reflashed if that doesn't work then maybe a junkyard. don't have the 1000 bucks right now.

Got the used tipm Saturday and put it on. Works great no problems no warning lights or anything. I changed the a/c compressor coil which they said couldn,t be done and the tipm all for less then $125. That's a far cry from the 1200 some wanted to charge be to change the compressor and recharge.
By the way I didn't have to use a scan tool or anything, I just unplugged one and plugged the other one in. I do think the years probably have to be the same but not for sure on that. Good luck. I'm sure glad to have an a/c back.
I'm beginning to wonder if these are VIN locked, I installed one today from an '06 and and did nothing other than plug it in, no scan tool or anything. Everything works and the great thing about this is this drain of 1.7 amps on my batteries is now at .025, so my tipm must have been shorted or something.
