where can I find a good tipm for a 2006 3500 5.9 cummins and do I need it tobe installed at a dealer. I'm in Ontario

Blake Clark 06-15-2010 08:15 PM

They are VIN locked, so while it may not have to be a dealer per say, it will need to be someone who has access to a starscan.

Why are you replacing ? May just need to be flashed or reset, read tsb it may apply to your problem.

the air conditioning quit working the service person put a tipm from another 2006 truck and the air worked so we bypassed the tipm and the air works but unsure if that is safe to do

I'm having the same issue. Don't understand how tipm off another 06 can work if they are locked. I used one off a friends for a weekend trip with no probs. Gonna try having mine reflashed if that doesn't work then maybe a junkyard. don't have the 1000 bucks right now.

melesprocnc 06-21-2010 07:56 PM

let me know if it works. When they put the other tipm in a bunch of warning lights came on

codyh 06-23-2010 08:25 PM

Haven't had time to have mine reflashed but I have plugged the tipm off of two other 06's with no problems. Might have to be the exact same year. I,ll keep you posted.

What was the outcome of switching a used one?

Bought a used one I'm picking today. 75$. Figured it was worth the gamble. I,ll let you know if it works.

Got the used tipm Saturday and put it on. Works great no problems no warning lights or anything. I changed the a/c compressor coil which they said couldn,t be done and the tipm all for less then $125. That's a far cry from the 1200 some wanted to charge be to change the compressor and recharge.

codyh 07-06-2010 10:30 AM

By the way I didn't have to use a scan tool or anything, I just unplugged one and plugged the other one in. I do think the years probably have to be the same but not for sure on that. Good luck. I'm sure glad to have an a/c back.

has any problems shown up yet with the used TIPM

gunnie 07-25-2010 08:06 PM

I'm beginning to wonder if these are VIN locked, I installed one today from an '06 and and did nothing other than plug it in, no scan tool or anything. Everything works and the great thing about this is this drain of 1.7 amps on my batteries is now at .025, so my tipm must have been shorted or something.
