Ticking/Tapping Noise

I can't tell which it is, a tick or a tap, but from outside the truck i can hear it more/louder from the drivers side. I know its not the lift pump cause it is not in the engine bay(in tank). To me it sounds to loud to be an injector, but I have never owned a diesel before.

What all could it be besides an injector? cp3?

I can kinda hear it or a sound similiar but quieter with only the key in the "on" position.

I am getting a solid 9psi from my lift pump at idle and when the key is "on".

Any help is appreciated...

I got an auto stethoscope today, but haven't got to listen to different parts of the engine yet. Where is the cp3 in the bay? I haven't the slightest idea.

On a side note. The reason I haven't listened to anything yet is because my neighbors are outside and I don't want to make them mad... haha... I can't wait tll our next contract at work. After it is approved I am moving out in the counrty. I am gonna have at least 20 or so acres so I can have room for all my toys and have room to have freinds(you guys) over. BTW I work for AK Steel and I am sure everyone heard what happened with the middletown, oh plant when the union contract came due. on strike for over a year. I really hope that don't happen to us.

YUCK

Just got the steth out and am pretty sure that it is the cp3. I could hear it clear as a bell when i touched any of the lines leaving the fuel rail to the injectors. anywhere around the head or exhaust side i could just barely hear it so im pretty sure its not a valve.

Has anyone been about to dig up the thread about re timing the cp3? i have searched all combos to the words and haven't found it.

Here is the thread. Sounds like what mine was doing before I rotated the cp3's shaft so it was no longer out of time with the engines stroke. Mine would get louder when the engine was hot and the oil thinner , which let the gears make more noise when they slapped.

actually i don't think that is really all my problem. i can also hear a clicking/ticking/something when the key is in the ON position without the motor running.

could it be the overflow valve or anything?

My ticking sound was a loose fuel line clamp. I would have never thought it could have been that loud, but according to the Cummins tech it's a very common problem these days. Wouldn't the tick with the engine off be the grid heater? I don't know why it would be doing it in the summer, but stranger things have happened. In the winter, the ticking will stop when the wait to start light goes off.

The clicking with the key on is the FCA. You should be able to feel it. The FCA ( fuel control actuator ) is on the back of the CP3.
