That’s a very good possibility. As we know, increasing altitude reduces barometric pressure. Less pressure allows gases and liquids to expand and--uh--and. Rats! Actually, I know what you were talking about (being level and such) but maybe there is a difference between the older and newer years like bigger turbo oil hoses or an oil pan or oil filter housing change. Interesting stuff.

Reguardless of what the dipstick says, the 5.9 takes 3 gallons(12 quarts) of oil. No more, no less.

so here it is:

does 3 gallons mean 3 gallons in the crankcase plus priming the filter with an extra quart OR 3 gallons total takes care of the oil for the engine and the filter priming?

Thanks.

Mine takes 1 quart in the filter and 11 in the crankcase, and I do my own oil changes always have, and total is always 12, and it wont burn 1 quart in 10thou miles even towing, love it.

This is the correct answer.

I have no idea how much mine holds. There's a bypass filter that holds a gallon and the lines to/from it are about 10 feet long, so probably another quart in there. I pre-fill the filters and pour in three gallons. It's at full on the dipstick after that. I think that's all you need to worry about.

It takes 3 gallons with a filter change. If you have added a by-pass filter it is more...
