Surging at highway speeds

Ok, this started about 3 or 4 weeks ago. After about 30 minutes on the road and at steady speeds (around) 65 - 70 I start getting random engine surges. Can't see any fluctuation in the tach but I am getting 4 - 5 pound swings on boost. Feels like I am losing fuel. Thought at first it was bad fuel. Changed the filter and have been through at least 5 tanks since it started. No difference. Next thought was fuel pump starting to fail. Don't have FP gauges (yet) so I don't have any proof but if I drop a gear and hammer it I don't have the problem. So, I don't think I am starving for fuel. So now I am thinking wastegate fluctuation? Don't have any good ideas on how to verify this.

Anyone have any suggestions? Besides the fact that it is annoying I just hate it when things don't run right.

Other things:
1) Used fuel from several different high volume locations and have filled the Ford there at the same time with no ill effects
2) When I changed the filter the old one had about 12k on it and didn't look bad at all. No gunk.
3) Have not had any water in fuel indications and drain down regularly.

Thanks, Mark

I think Dodge has a computer fix for that, seems like I've heard of it here before. I think the dealer just flashes your computer to fix it. Call your dealer and have them take care of it.-Steve
PS- Were you running cruise control, cause now that I think of it, I think the surging prob was while using cruise...

Happened with and without cruise on. Remembered the cruise control thing. Was waiting to see if anyone had other ideas before getting a re-flash done. Truck has been perfect up to know and didn't want to mess with the computer if I didn't have to. Thanks.

Re:Surging at highway speeds

Well it started surging so bad yesterday I thought it was going to finally die. Went by a small town dealership to see if they could check it out. Went through the book and checked for loose hoses etc. They admitted they didn't work a lot on diesels. They didn't find anything but re-flashed the computer just in case. Surge is still there. Guess I am going to have to resign myself to leaving it at a local dealer for several days.

Thinking seriously about investing in some software for the laptop too see if I can capture the data when it starts happening. Maybe then somebody could diagnose it.

Sigh...

Re:Surging at highway speeds

My 03 surges a bit with the cruise on and I also see a 3 to 5lbs. of boost swing with no RPM increase or decrease but I can can feel it in the seat of the pants.
It has been doing this since new and I took it back to my dealer for this problem and they installed a new cruise actuator? Still have the same problem. Have not been back to garage yet to tell them problem still happening.

Re:Surging at highway speeds

My 03 does this in cruise AND will contunue to do so for about 30-40 miles when cruise is turned off. I have tried this many times and it holds true. About 40 miles after cruise is turned off it goes away. Stop using cruise control (if you do) and drive at least 40 miles without using cruise at any time and see what happens. Please let us know.

Hope this helps.
