Grid Heater cycling after truck warm and highway speeds
Grid Heater cycling after truck warm and highway speeds
First of all, this is a great sight to glean info. I'm a newbe to the diesel world and loving every bit of it. I have a CTD 04 2500 auto with 36000 miles, bought used and I added the edge mod.
I have a buzzing noise under the dash which I believe to be the grid heater cycling from what info I have found here. The probelm is it keeps cycling even after I reach normal temps and am going highway speeds. It keeps doing this for 30+ min (probably longer because I am either at my destination or the radio is turned up).
First is this bad? It does't seam like it would be good for the truck or the grid heater. Second, do I need to replace something or clean something or have Dodge take a look at it? If I can fix the problem myself, I would love to. I just need help in the correct direction. Kind of a blind squirrel in the engine compartment. Third, is there a book out like Childers or something for this truck yet?
Thanks for the replies in advance.

My grid heaters don't buzz at all. The only way I know they are working is the lights go from dim to bright a couple times.
If your grid heaters are actually staying on as long as you say I'm wondering if the edge (or any other aftermarket electrical device you might have) got wired wrong. I read a post a long time ago about somebody using one of the grid heater posts as a ground and that somehow fired the heaters.
You could pull the "intake air heater" relays in the PDC which is in the engine compartment, front driver's side.

I dont think the Edge EZ is wired wrong, 4 plugs, 2 that go between the fuel pressure sensor and wire harness and 2 that go between the map and wire harness. Cant reverse them either.
The buzzing (almost like a timmer sound) noise was there before I got the Edge EZ. When I turn the key, I get a click or "pop" under the hood then the buzz for 5+ seconds until the grid heater light goes out. If I set for a while without starting, like a few min, the buzzing returns for 5-10 sec and then stops. Sometimes the click or pop will happen before or after the buzz but not consistantly or in a pattern.
From other posts I read here about the grid heater, the pop or click is the relay letting the grid heater have power to heat and the buzz was it heating (maybe an internal timer somewhere?). The Dodge owners manuel stated it should stop after the truck is at temp or you obtain speeds over 18kph I believe.
Am I burnning something out in the grid heater if that is what is causing the buzzing?
I will go out do some more listening to see if I can find a definite soure of the buzz.
Thanks for the reply handymantim, I'll also try the relay for the "intake air heater".

Well I feel like a Giant Boob. I went out to find the buzzing, and I found it. When I turn on the key, a small pump between the passenger side battery and the coolent fill/overflow tank buzzes. From following the lines I think it has something to do with the window washer fluid. Off topic, but only one line goes into the pump and that is the line that sprays the window. Now is that pump bad or going bad? I can spray the window fluid fine. The pump cycles for about 5+ seconds on and 15-20 seconds off. Turning the key on and the poping noise from under the hood lead me to believe the pump was the grid heater cycling. I did hear the real noise from the grid heater, sounded like an electric gas grill ignition firing.
Again thanks for the help and a place to post questions, no matter how dumb the cause may be.

Home of the giant boob!
No such thing as dumb questions. If it's really dumb we'll let you know.
Seeing as how you are from OK we will no longer cut you any slack though. Sooners don't get any slack around here!
