Stupid Fuel Filter Question
Stupid Fuel Filter Question
I didn't realize at first I posted this in the 2007+ forum.
I got a pretty stupid question about my fuel filter. How often are you supposed to drain the housing with the yellow lever and are you supposed to leave it open until it stops flowing? I changed my filter a few days ago, and I flipped the lever and I got about 6oz out that didn't quite look/smell like diesel, maybe my nose is a bit stuffed up. But she does run noticeably smoother now! I think I'll change at 7500 instead of 10k. Also, can anyone that lives in the So Cal area help me install my fuel tank vent mod? I can't get my big hands on top of the tank to disconnect the wires.

My 05 maintenance manual says to change the fuel filter out ever 15,000 miles for the B Maintenance schedule. However, most people are changing the filters every other oil change or 10,000 miles. Which ever is easier to remember. Yes, you are to use the yellow level to drain the the canister and check for water.
You are supposed to open the yellow drain on the fuel canister for a few seconds at every fill-up, or when the water in fuel light comes on. However, I drain a little bit every 3 to 6 weeks or earlier if I have been driving and filling up in heavy rain or snow just to make sure there is no water in the fuel system. Just make sure to drain it in the morning or after the truck has been sitting for a period of time to let any water settle towards the bottom near the drain. Since water is heavier than Diesel Fuel.
When changing your filter, do drain the canister completely. Because, you can send dirty unfiltered fuel to the CP3 and Injectors when you remove the fuel filter. Due to the unfiltered fuel inside the fuel filter fill tube spilling out and mixing with the clean filter fuel in the fuel canister, when removing the filter from the canister.
Just remember, any question not asked is a stupid question. So ask!

I change that crappy stock filter every oil change 8000kms, i don't even take a chance, its cheap insurance. I spent a couple hundred bucks on the 2 micron filter kit from Glacier Diesel Performance with the big line kit to filter my fuel even more, like i said cheap insurance. Even if you don't put a better filtration unit on your truck i would go out of my way to get the baldwin 5 micron drop in stock filters for your truck. Worth the piece of mind.
As far as opening up that yellow lever, its a good routine to drop some fuel out of there once in awhile to get rid of some H2O. But as far as filtration, you never know when your gonna get a bad batch of fuel from a fuel vendor. I fuel out of a slip tank a lot with the line of work i'm in, my slip tank is filtered, then my truck tank is filtered through my stock filter into the GDP 2 micron filter into the Cp3. Filtered 3 times, its piece of mind!
