A friend picked up a 03' quad cab 6 speed with 285K on it for $9K everything checks out good, normal blow by for such mileage and zero oil usage. truck looks and runs great except it drives power wise like 1994 160 HP truck and smokes heavily- could not here the turbo much either. No codes- whatcha all think?

 

Cheap and easy diagnostic? I would pull a boot off the turbo and see if it spins freely by hand. Not hearing the turbo whine, as well as the black smoke and no power, are good clues the turbo isn't working as expected.

What are the boost readings? What are the low side and high side fuel pressure readings?

If the truck doesn't have those gauges, that's the 1st step.

 

doesn't have gauges, hooked my OBD up to it, but no rail or boost readings. Will explore turbo issues as mentioned, waste gate and the berring slop

 

My 2004 ran like that previous owner put the wrong injectors in it.
