Smoke and low MPG - Injectors?
#17
would definitely be checking for leaks, but the smell could be from fuel that leaked onto something, when they replaced the pump and injectors. i'd take a good look and sniff under the hood, and see if you can tell where it's coming from.

Where would the most likely place be for a leak? Also, the engine is making a tapping/knocking sound at idle that definately wasn't there before. You can even hear it inside the cab.

DO NOT check for leaks near the high pressure lines and rail while it is running. If you must, use a piece of cardboard or something. The pressures involved even at idle cold mame or kill you.

So I called the dealer and he said that a fuel line could be leaking. He said the sound could be an injector line sucking air.
Today the truck is running rough. I checked the codes and I get a P2509. I checked out the injector lines and there is one that looks like it MAY be leaking but I can't really tell. I looked at all of them with the engine running with a flashlight and I can't see any visible leaks, dripping, etc.
Are these compression connectors going into the engine?
The smell of unburnt diesel is strong under the hood with the engine running.
HELP!!! I don't want to damage the injectors or the injection pump. What else can I check?

Got the truck from the dealer yesterday. The fuel return line was leaking. They fixed it.
I am still hearing a new sound from the engine that I didn't hear before they worked on it. Like a ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch or ts-ts-ts-ts-ts-ts-ts sound. They did check the turbo while the truck was in the shop. Maybe they didn't get the boot on it right? Or maybe they moved the exhaust and it hasn't settled yet? It's coming from under the hood though.
I asked them about it and they said they didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Sounds like a normal diesel. I think they just don't listen to diesels very close and they pass off any racket coming from the engine as normal diesel sound, no matter how out of the ordinary it is.

Took it to the dealer Thursday before leaving for a 1000 mile trip to see if they could fix it. The service writer listened to it and described the noise to the tech and came back and said it sounds like an o ring isn't seated right on one of the fuel lines. They didn't have time to fix it Thursday but I took it in today so they could replace the o ring. It idled rough over the weekend, it was kinda worrying me. I hope an injector isn't damaged now. Maybe they will get it right this time!

The dealer couldn't figure it out so I went to visit them today. The service manager, several techs and I was standing around listening and trying to figure it out when one tech came along and crawled up on the front bumper and started feeling around on the lines. When he grabbed the #6 line, it immediately went away. Loose fuel line clamp... Funny just a loose clamp can make such a hell of a sound. Tightened with a wrench and on my way!

A great thread! keep us informed about the mileage as well.
FWIW, in my 2wb 06 mega, I get 18.6 mixed around town, 21 hiway (70 mph) with a/c on,
and can hypermile about 25 mpg at 55 mph, no a/c, flat ground, windows open.
27mpg at 45.

Transmission failed on me about a week ago, it is at the dealer right now getting rebuilt. I told them to hunt down the vibration too. I am at the point where I just want this truck fixed so I can drive it like a normal truck.
I have bought many used GM and Dodge trucks before and had good luck with all of them, until now. I guess when you buy a used truck, you roll the dice. This time I lost.
