Injectors, injectors, injectors
Republic Diesel near here handles Cummins. They said that stock injectors would run $152 each. 190s around $100 each (huh? can that be right?). They have 40hp injectors for $695 a set plus cores. Fleabay has them for $355 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...10491981&rd=1).
Anybody dealt with that ebayer? And what is the "40hp Bosch Injector" comperable too in the aftermarket world?
I'm considering an upgrade but not looking for huge hp and want to stay away from smoke and high EGTs since I do some hauling and towing.
Any enlightenment appreciated.

I'd recommend staying aaway from them for their prices alone- PDR can beat that.
As for the HP increases, i think most of it is a sales pitch. My stock injectors make 50-75hp over stock with pump tuning alone (30-31psi, no smoke, and 1300EGT), so saying you gain X horsepower will depend on how your pump is tuned, and what else you have added to it.
That said, I'd stick with a tried and true vendor with good service, decent prices, and a known product. No more experimental EDMs for me. Bosch 190s will add 30-40hp depending on your setup. Bully Dog has some 50hp injectors that I have heard good things about, though they are NOT extrude honed, and the are somewhat pricey. JLEONARD had them in his early 91, though I'm not sure if he still does. Do a forum search and you can come up with enough info to make your head spin.

, I just need a tried and true modest upgrade. What is "extrude honed" and why is that desirable?I did do a search and it did make my head spin! Thats what got me confused on all the different injectors to the point I wasn't sure who was refering to what
. I did find the homemade removal tool though which was really cool and I plan to duplicate!I've not checked the manual yet for details and torques but are injectors indexed at all or does it matter how they go back in?
Wannadiesel, I was thinking maybe what they were calling 40hp injectors were 190s but he said they were just 40hp injectors with no other "name". I thought 190 was the Bosch number...Never having an injector out can you look on one and identify it? Like are there model numbers or something?
20-30hp over stock in a nonIC truck will equate to about 50-60hp in a IC truck.
Some shops, PDR in particular, did a bunch of R&D to come up with a replacement injector for the Power Wagon/ 185 injectors after Bosch did some major price gouging (went from $300 a set to $850 a set) about 4 years ago. the 190s were named so because they consistently gave 5hp over the 185 in every truck they dynoed.
If you're only wanting a little extra power, you wont stress your pump til you use the extra power. I'm at the point I wont put anything in my pickup with a spray pattern other than stock. I was running some extrude honed marine sticks from DD, and I had a BUNCH of fire marks on top of my pistons, telling me the spray was too wide for the bowl and a lot of fuel wasnt getting burned. The smoke out the tailpipe was also an indication. i put stock injectors in, and now I can only get 30-32psi boost, but I also run a LOT cooler EGT, and seem to be getting better MPGs, too. The sticks I put in werent as good on the stand (spray and pop pressure evenness) as the others, but perform better in the engine.
Extrude honing is where they take an injector and run a super fine abrasive media through the holes in the tip to hone and smooth them out. If done right on a good injector tip (i.e. matched to your piston bowl), they can deliver more power without any extra smoke, or so the theory goes.

just called and talked to pensacola diesel, they are a hertzog body from germany and they assemble the rest of the injector themselves, 30hp N/IC and 50hp I/C, 1 year warranty, 279 plus 14 bucks shipping, i think i might go with these, dont seem like a bad deal and the guy was willing to give any info on them.

Thanks Pucket for the details. I was the two toned club cab at SOP. Copper & sand. Sounds like you've had your head off. Was that just to see injector tracks or for something else?
Anybody else with experience from pensecola? They sound a little bigger than 190's.
KRB- I had my head off for a leaking head gasket and just overall not running "right" Turns out the head was bowed about .008" Had it milled .095 and slapped a 20 over HG in there.
I'm not going to pull the head just to check the injectors pattern.

Puckett - what bowed the head? Too much HP
OK, I think I finally found the injector that didn't affect the engine when I cracked the line. Smoke didn't change but the engine didn't run any rougher either when cracked like the others and it "foamed" instead or squirting, kinda like a beer can shook up
.
So I pulled it. Full of carbon and gunk on the tip, thus must be the culprit huh?. Its a Bosch "887" or is that 007? Is that stock? Also says "KDAL 59 P 9, 171 245 bar".
First time I've had an injector out. Whats the little ball bearing for?
And when re-enstalling, are there torque values for the injector and return lines?
Think I'll run an injector from the parts truck for the time being and order some 190's from PDR in the mean time...

The little ball aligns the injector properly so the spray pattern goes in the piston bowl. Make sure you put the ball in the slot when you reinstall the injector.
There are torque values, but getting a torque wrench set up on them is challenging. The big nut on the injector body should be good and tight. The injector line should be tight enough not to leak. The return banjo should be tight enough that it doesn't fall out but not so tight that you break it.
