Silencer ring, does it increase flow?

Hi guys, I'm new to this site and new to Cummins Power! but not new to diesels.

I have to ask, if you remove the silencer ring, does it increase the turbo flow or decrease the turbo lag? Or does it just make it sing louder? ;D Is there anything easily done that will increase the turbo spool up? I am a survivor of several years of fixin and working to get my old F--D 6.9 to put out some power, and after I was done with all the turbo stuff and special ram air intake/ exhaust and all, my old 6.9 would accelerate and pull really great. I was just wondering if there are any "standard" simple changes that will cause the turbo to spool up quicker. I know that the best thing you can spend money and time with diesels is opening up both the intake and the exhaust, it gets you the best performance with the least money. It also cuts down the EGTs readily. I'm so happy with this SWEET HO that I really am only asking academically not that I need any more power or less turbo-lag. These engines are FANTASTIC!! I am now a cummins fanatic! Thanks for letting me join this fantastic site.

Congrats on your new truck & membership. To put it bluntly the piece of tin located inside air intake of the Holset turbo does nothing other than quiet the turbo whistle-DC aka mercedes wanted to shhhhhhhhhhh the turbo not to offend any happless golfers at pebble beach when you pull up to the clubhouse... :

Re:Silencer ring, does it increase flow?

Thanks fireNhole, then I guess to not offend golfers I'll leave it alone for the time being, when I texify(modify the truck to meet texas exhaust requirements) the muffler (take the guts out of it and make it straight thru as they all are here), then in order to still hear the turbo over the bark of the exhaust I will remove the silencer at that time. I will be offending all the golfers when I pull up to the clubhouse and rap the throttle just before I show them the 12 gauge in the gun rack. I only go to shoot a round! It must be a different concept of shooting huh? Oops. Thanks for the reply!

Too bad it doesn't get rid of a little lag. Hmm must find another way, just need a tweek more rapid acceleration. Rather than barking the limited slip duallys for a foot off the line in second I could bark them a foot and a half. Must be a cummins guy thing............Gotta have more................

The silencer ring just provides silence. No performance gain from its eviction.

Simple spool up help.
1. Install a high flow air filter of your choice.
2. Enlarge the air inlet on the air filter box
3. Make the exhaust as free flowing as possible. The 03's are running 4" pipe which is fine...just loose the stock muffler for a less restrictive or no muffler

A ford 6.9??? talk about an old Diesel .

I believe it is 4" back to the muffler and then from the muffler back it's 3.5".

Other way around there Hoss. It is 3.5 inch between muff and elbow - 4" from muffler to tailpipe tip. The elbow outlet is 4" though, so

Re:Silencer ring, does it increase flow?

By the way...I'd give someone a dollar if they could explain WHY Dodge would set the exhaust up that way. Why not just run a 4" all the way??

Hoss you answered you own question. I think D/C must have saved a dollar on the piece of 3 1/2" over the 4"
