04 cummins without egr??
Re:04 cummins without egr??
The aftermarket guys or forum members are going to have to figure out how to remove the egr without a check engine light. For 'off road' use only of course... :

Re:04 cummins without egr??
i dont know about diesel engines but every gas eng. vehicle produced after 96 has an egr monitoring system as well as the egr system itself making it expensive to not only disable the egr but to also "fool" the confuser into thinking the egr is working properly. not saying it cant be done only its going to get in your wallet.

In VW TDI diesels, the combination of the EGR and CCV system cause horrible intake clogging. This is due to the high amount of sulfur and particulate matter in our crappy diesel fuel as compared to the european diesel that the engine is designed for. Folks have had their intakes clogged 95%, to the point the air hole was about the size of a nickel. Some have disabled the egr by replacing it with a straight pipe and blocking off the flow from the exhaust. The combat the check engine light, a simple vacuum switch(for the hose to connect to) and diode trick the ecu into thinking the egr is functional. I must point out, these types of mods are for off road use, tampering with your emissions equipment is illegal....
Re:04 cummins without egr??
sulfur=soot and the oily fumes and mist from the ccv combine with the soot to form a hard carbon. Icky mess, I just had mine all apart last night cleaning it.
Re:04 cummins without egr??
the intake on an inline cummins & a jetta are two totally different animals im not worried about passages clogging as much as a carbon rock holding the pintle of the egr open causing a lean condition . lean = heat , heat = :'( :'( the passages can be kept clean with proper warm up ,shut down times & good maint . just a mech. of 16 yrs two cents
When 2006 and ULSD roll around, the clogging problem will be minimized. Right now the limit of 500ppm of sulfur per gallon just makes too much soot.
That still baffles me. 500ppm is .05%. That's five one hundreths of one percent max content of sulfur in #2; I understand most diesel is actually testing out quite a bit less than that, around 250-300ppm.

But the thing that really puzzles me is that unless I'm mistaken, soot is carbon. I am not aware of any process in which sulfur can be converted into carbon, leading me to the perhaps erroneous conclusion that low sulfur diesel isn't going to do a thing for the VW's intake clogging problem.
Re:04 cummins without egr??
the egr system helps remove the soot from the exhaust so the TDI's have low soot output on their exhaust .........

problem is it's injected pre intercooler so the soot filled exhuast travels through the intercooler & intake leaving behind small bits all the way ...........after a while it plugs up

on that note my mom has 230,000 km on her 97 jetta TDI and has had no problems yet, so I wouldn't worry about it too much ..........

Not every car has an EGR vavle.

Corvettes don't have an EGR and 01 and 02 LS1 Camaro's/Trans Am's don't either.

They made the cam with enough overlap (i believe that is what they did) to take care of the problem.
