I'm curious about how much more you can hear the turbo sing after that ring of silence is thwarted?

If you just remove the ring and keep a stock paper filter, it is a pleasant turbo sound. If you install a K&N filter and remove the ring it really makes the turbo "whine" stand out. I do not believe the K&N filters are yet available for the 2003 trucks.

Also, be careful about removing the ring. It may trip a tamper sensor in the computer and if you ever need engine warranty work, may cause you some grief. Personally, I'd leave it all alone until you find out more about the warranty issues. Just installing a K&N filter will give you a pleasant increase in turbo whine.

My 2 cents!

Thats the first I ever heard about a tripping a tamper sensor ???Are you talking about the 03?Took it out of the other trucks I had and never tripped nothing ;DI have heard of a few taking the silencer ring out of a 03 and never no mention of this as you call it tamper sensor.

Watch out! Putting a K&N filter will void your engine warranty, you may want to consult your dealer before you do any mods to your new truck.

??? Jason, Federal law prevents any warranty from being voided merely for adding aftermarket components. My 5-Star dealer recommends and SELLS K&N filters (although none are available for the '03 CTD yet).

Blownbanana,
You are right, I retract my previous statement about the K&N filter. I did a little snooping around the web and found this:

"Overall, the laws governing warranties are very clear. The only time a new vehicle warranty can be voided is if an aftermarket part has been installed and it can be proven that it is responsible for an emission warranty claim. However, a vehicle manufacturer or dealership cannot void a warranty simply because an an aftermarket equipment has been installed on a vehicle."

"If a dealership denies a warranty claim and you think the claim falls under the rules explained above concerning the clean air act (such as an emission part failure), obtain a written explanation of the dealers refusal. Then follow the steps outlined in the owners manual. However, if this fails, then phone your complaint in to the EPA at (202) 233-9040 or (202) 326-9100."

My dealership has been distributing the wrong info about K&N, and other aftermarket filters available for diesels. I will bring this to their attention. Thanx!

i have had a afe replacement filter on my truck for about 2 weeks now, and have noticed a nice seat of the pants improvement in throttle response.

removal of the silencer ring will do absolutely nothing for you.

plow.

Leave the ring in. The reason its there is to improve FLOW into the turbo. If air flows smoother its usually quieter. I made a bigger aluminun cone that tapers all the way out to the boot. Real quiet lots of flow, like a big volicity stack.
Danny
