shifting into 4 wheel drive - grinding gears

I have 2004 dodge diesel quad cab long bed 4x4. I tried to shift into 4 wheel drive recently and it was scary. The noise that was coming from the transfer case was nasty. Do you have to shut off the engine to shift into 4 wheel drive. Low was even more difficult. What am I doing wrong. Did I do any damage to my truck's transmission or transfer case by trying to grind them into 4 wheel drive.

do you have the ****, or the manual shifter? No, you dont shut the truck down, in fact it is better to be moving. This helps everything go into place. When going into 4 hi, you can do that up to 50 mph....according to the book. When going into 4low, the ideal spead is 3mph with the shifter in neutral(sp) if you have an auto.

I have never heard any grinding noises, and i have used 4wd alot. My old Dakota had the electronic transfer case and she did "clunk" every time i took it out of 4 low. But that was normal

Fill out yer sig, so we know what you have.

There shouldnt be a noticable difference going from 2wd to 4wd hi. manual or electric. You might get a thump if you wheels were turned alot one way, but a grind from 2wd to 4wd hi is not normal, unless you put it in doing 110. going in and out of low range can be tricky some times but that goes for all 4wds. Does it grind every time you put it into 4wd?

mine is quite as can be switching between 4 hi and 2 wheel drive. i have the manual shift but it works perfect. i didn't want the electronic shift as it would be just one more thing to break.

look forward to your reply.

Grinding is definitely not normal. Maybe your transfer case is low on fluid, or the lever is out of adjustment.

I've engaged and disengaged my 4hi going as quick as 65mph with no issues.

I have the lever on the floor and my truck tranny is an automatic. My truck was stopped when I tried to shift into 4 wheel drive --- grinding that did not sound normal --- really loud --- I have old jeeps and they do not make sounds like this truck did

To shift into 4Low you need to be going about 3mph. Drop you automatic into neutral and then in one quick movement, shove the shifter forward into 4Low. Put some oomf behind it, you won't hurt it any.

get the truck on a hill and in neutral flip it into 4x4, and see if it will coast... if it binds real bad, you might have mismatched gearing in the axles... mine will go in/out of 4x4 with no questions when driving straight. if i have the wheels turned to lock and moving it won't go in as there is a difference in speed between the front and rear driveshafts at that point

when you were stopped, were you trying to shift into 4 HI or 4 LO? If you ere going into 4HI I'd suggest you be moving and just lift you foot off the throttle a bit. Don't stop to put it in 4HI!

I found the ideal speed to shift into 4 LO is when the tranny is in neutral (i have an auto) and the truck is just about to stop rolling, then I flip my switch from 4HI to 4LO and it goes "clunk" and i'm in. no too much fuss.

Shifting from 2WD to 4HI can be done at any speed under 50 MPH while traveling in a striaght line! Don't expect to put it in 4HI while going around a corner sucessfully - things will bind and grind.
