Rough start-up and idle, mileage gone to crap

Hey all,

First timer here. I have a 2006 D3500 with 150k on it. This early this week the engine started running rough upon start-up. It would clear up within a few minutes after it warmed up a little. Now it is running rough at idle almost all of the time and the fuel mileage has gotten very bad (as in 10-11 mpg while pulling an empty trailer) Also hearing some funny ticking noises.
It still makes good power though. And seems to run smoothly at highway speed.

Any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Tim

Sounds like you are starting to have injector issues.

I took the truck over to the local Diesel Injection Service place yesterday. They put a scanner on and told me that I had 3 injectors that were not flowing enough fuel. He said that the injectors needed to be replaced. I asked him if they could be cleaned or rebuilt. He said they just change them. He thought they were about $400 ea.

Has anybody used OK Injector Service (OKINJECTOR.COM)? They are advertising rebuilding these injectors for $70 ea. with a 72 hr turn around.

Before you pull the trigger on injector replacement, make sure the fuel pump (and related components) is supplying correct psi...weak pump will cause injectors to act up.

Things are not always what they seem to be. I had a very rough idle in my 07 5.9. I took it to several places and ask for their best guess. Was told it was the injectors.....was told it was the valves needed adjusting badly....did adjust them but no change. Then someone on DTR suggested it could be dual mass flywheel gone bad at 130,000 Kilometres. Spoke to some local mechanics and they agreed. Replaced the flywheel and clutch and she went smooth as silk. Got CENTRIC flywheel and clutch kit all for 700.00 off Amazon and a guy in Texas where we camp the winter installed it all for 300.00
The one thing that might throw this possibility out for you is your bad mileage. I did not experience any change that I noticed.
Good luck.

DON'T use anything but BOSCH rebuilt injectors. F1 diesel also does a good job. IF, you risk using cheap brand X it will cost you. You will be having constant injector issues, or burn up an engine.

Spooler, I tried to look up the F1 Diesel but their website is under construction. Can't tell much about them. The OKINJECTOR guys rebuild your injectors, so if I use them I'll be putting my own injectors back in.

With that many miles on his injectors, I beat they are done. He had a return flow test done on them anyway and 3 failed.

Fly Wheel

TMC,
Do you have a standard tranny. I had the same issue like Way Up North. Found that the dual mass was so out of balance that it was causing the injectors to miss fire. Once I got up to high way speeds it seemed to smooth out, but the fuel mileage was real bad.
