rough idle/ hard start/ no start/ smoke maker ***??

I will first have to admit that I hadnt changed my fuel filter in 3 years. Kinda forgot.
4 days ago my truck began to idle rough at low speeds then was very hard to start. Took 6 cycles to get it going. Still rough sounding. The next day it wouldnt start. I suspected an injector but no proof or maybe a clogged fuel filter. I changed my filter and added a can of Sea Foam to the filter cannister and a can of HEET fuel additive to combat any water contamination if present. I didnt see any water in the filter cannister when I drained it. Still unable to start. The next day I was able to get it started but it was billowing huge clouds of white smoke. I got some P codes 0251, 0088 and eventually 1754.

It would knock very loudly . I was able to limp to a nearby service station whwere they plugged it in. They werent diesel specialized but seemed knowledgable. They were able to isolate each injector but the performance didnt change as they swithced off and each each inector. I assumed that the inectors were not at issue based upon the fact that if i had a bad injector my engine would have improved when i turned off that inector.
I was able to drive the truck home after that. It seemed to work a lot better but not sure what it was that changed. Maybe the Sea Foam or fuel injector cleaner I added??
I still had the error codes. It starts up a little slower now but still starts. No more huge clouds of white smoke just an occasional puff. I deleted the codes yesterday and have been driving it since. Still rough idle but runs. No more error codes since the service check at the local station.

I am perplexed but I was guessing my FCA???? Any thoughts?
I was about to check the fuel pressure after the lift pump but have no idea where to plug the gauge in.

3 yrs without a filter change!!!!! You're lucky you made it that long. Sounds like injector issues to me but you might be able to run some heavy doses of fuel additive through it to see if that helps. What year model, how many miles, any mods?? Fill out your signature so we have all the info on the truck.

An FCA wouldn't be a bad idea....they're about $120 from Genos Garage. Run some fuel through it with REGULAR FILTER CHANGES and let us know how it's doing.

Oh, and to the forum.

Thanx!
I am running a stock 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4. Only mod I have done was to add a K&N air filter.
I have 125000 miles on it. I do regular oil changes.
this is a great resource so far
