I would expect oil out of the bottom of the bellhousing.

Replacing it looks pretty straight forward, once you pull the transmission and flywheel.

As long as you have no problem pulling the trans the actual replacement of the seal is a piece of cake.

does pulling the fly wheel mean taking the clutch off of it first

Yep. You'd have to.
Pull the drivelines
Drop the t-case
Pull the trans
Remove clutch
Remove Flywheel
And there's the rear main staring you in the face

Good time to upgrade to a dd or a triple

My rear main was leaking, but I could never tell because of my blow-by tube. Every once in a while I spew a little oil out of the tube and it would end up dripping down right near the slot at the front of the bellhousing. Do you have your blow-by tube extended? I still need to extend mine. BTW I don't think my seal was leaking all that bad. If you had one leaking really bad I suppose it would be possible for the oil to get onto the clutch disc. It could fling up and then drip down. That wouldn't be good if a guy had a disc with organic facings. Probably not good for the other type's either, but that's just speculation on my part. I think my rear main seal leakage might have helped contribute to my clutch's death..........well that and my Smarty

I thought I had a rear main seal leaking, when I looked closer it was the oil pan gasket leaking right in front of the bell housing and getting blown back.

Also, check the rockerbox at the back. They are prone to leak there also and most of the time that is where it comes from. Always start from the top and work your way down while trying to find an oil leak.
