Unhappy Real confused about what engine I have

Well, I finally did it. I bought my first Dodge & first diesel. I'm thinking it is a plain jane 2004 HO motor. BUT... when I looked a the engine. it said the advertised HP was 325 at 2900 RPM.
I thought it was 305 HP.
It says it was built 11/20/03. At the bottom of the sticker it says that it conforms to california regulation applicable to 2000 model year medium duty engine. The window sticker says HO diesel, nothing about 600.

Is this the 2004 HO 305/545 engine?

thanx,

David

You bought a "600". 04s have 305 hp, 04.5 have 325 h.p. But the window sticker will still say 04.

Airgrabber,

The engine was built on 11-20-03. Wasn't that before the 04.5?? Also it has the weighted donut thing around the power steering hose. There is a funny shaped object in front of the muffler. it is only about 12-18 inches long but about 8 " or so around at the middle. Is this a cat ?

The truck runs good. Still trying to get used to the 6 speed.

Thanx,

David

Bowman - that football-shaped thing is indeed the cat! You've got a 325/600.

An engine build date of November 20th isn't really early for a truck build date of January or later - they had to accumulate engines in inventory at the plant for the changeover.

Jim,

I didn’t think they started building the motor till January when they changed the line over to the new engine. Shouldn’t the sticker have said something bout the “600” ??? It only mentions it being “HO” I also heard something bout a resonator. Could the football thing be a resonator instead of the cat???

Bottom line is if the sticker on the valve cover says 325hp at 2900 rpm, its a 600.

I believe the 04MY trucks had the resonator and muffler. The 04.5's have the cat and a muffler. The cat would be located farther upstream than the resonator was in order to get it closer to the turbine outlet (to heat it up faster).

But use the information on the sticker on the top of the engine to be sure.

Yep, Thats a cat. And If the sticker on the motor says its 325, its the new motor.
Cummins probably built a handful before production actually started, and they were sitting at the factory waiting for a new home. The 6 speed can be a chore for a short time but once you get use to it and it gets use to you, you'll love it. And by the way, congrats on the new Dodge/Cummins and your 1st diesel.

Here is another quick check. If the overflow or windshield wiper bottle is on the firewall passenger side then it is the 325/600.
Also as you stated the window sticker stated that it met the 2000 California emmisions regs, so it is a HO 235/600. They are dropping the HO designation due to the fact they will only offer the 325/600. It's a bragging rights thing until FERD & Chevy get their problems fixed and realize you can't beat a CUMMINS

Another way to make sure is check to see if the fan schroud is bolted to the front of the engine and not the radiator, that will tell you for sure.......

The 325/600 I saw at the Cleveland Auto Show this past Saturday did have a different type of shroud than my 03, but it is still attached to the radiator. It did have a brace that attaches to the engine.
