Pulley squeek!
Pulley squeek!
Just started squeeking pretty bad tonight, usually when its cold I get a little squeek and it goes away when it warms up, now its not going away
Anyone know the PN for the idler pulley? (of it would be another pulley besides that)
Its RPM dependent, while cruising, no squeek letting off an coasting(about 750rpm) but as soon as you use the skinny pedal again its squeeling like a stuck pig
I dont THINK its the alternator pulley thats under the TSB, only because its doing it all the time now, not just the chirp on shutdown...
TIA guys

I have the same problem. I went with a Goodyear Gator-Back belt that is "suppose" to be a great belt. well it still squeaks. Maybe due to the bigger tires and wheels
Ill probably toss a new belt on it as well while im there, wont hurt....
Sometimes an easy way to diag this issue is to spray the belt with a little WD40 or similar while it is running, if the noise goes away it is the belt. If it doesn't take a long screwdriver or stethoscope and put it on one pulley (stationary part closest to pulley, not the moving part!) at a time while running and then ear to the screwdriver or stethoscope, the loudest one will pinpoint which pulley.
Hope this helps.

had a friend with an idler pulley go out, it shredded the belt while he was hot shotting a load. Had to go get his load for him and bring it back (4 in the morning too)
The idler pulley was terrible, it wasn't even round or flat on the belt, the pulley looked like it had eroded. I always heard the squeal prior to that when he would start the truck. The bearing froze up something awful, I could not get the pulley to turn not even a mm.
drolex you can check the idler by pulling the belt off the tensioner.

don't use wd40 it is a lubricant. use brake clean and spray the bearing of the pulley in suspect. if the squeak goes away then there is your problem.
My point was to use a light lubricant such as WD40...not on the idler bearing but a small shot on the belt. Sometimes belts get dry and start squeaking, a shot of WD40 will make it go away temporarily as a diagnostic measure. A small shot is not going to enter the air stream of the engine and do any harm...if you were to empty a whole bottle it may but I am talking about a 1-2 sec spray on the belts.
If the belt is not the cause then isolating it using a stethoscope is the next easiest aside from taking off the belt completely.

use belt dressing spray then and not a lubricant such as wd. if it is not the belt, then by adding a lubricant like wd, the belt can start slipping on the pulleys and then you are replacing the belt when it was not needed.
