Problems with the Cummins

My truck is at the dealership and the reason is, it would start then shut off start then shut off and then not start at all. Has anyone else had this problem My truck is the 04 cummins 600 diesel with quad cab and I plowed some snow the night before this happened. I tried all the tricks to get the beast to start but she just couldnt. If any one has had this problem or may know what it is please let me know. The tech is still working on it and they have not called back yet its been there all day.

Thanks

Could be the FOB. If the right code isn't received, the engine will start momentarily and then shut off. I saw this on another vehicle before. Had to switch out a part in the steering column and all was better.

This has happened to me too. Went into a limp home mode and thru a low boost code because of the obstructed filter.

Sounds like the lift pump. The same has happened to me. I'm awaiting the dealer response as well. Same deal happened three months ago. Of coarse at that time it was under warranty this time I get to fit the bill.

my lift pump failed and had some of the same symptoms you mention. I hear from the dealer this is a problem child and DC has been very recently shipping a newer/ better one out, supposedly put one on mine.

DC has been coming out with newer better lift pumps for seven years. Not very encouraging.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a Cummins item, not DC?

If the pump is on the filter housing, its a Cummins (Federal Mogul) lift pump (2003 to 2004.5). If the pump is in the tank (05's and beyond), its a DC item.

I keep hearing about the in-tank pump fixing the problems. Why would that pump be any better than the one on the filter housing?

Because a pump works much better as a pushing device than a pulling device. Putting the pump near the supply of what is being pumped is more effective and easier on the hardware. Of course, who know's if DC's execution of this design is ideal... time will tell, but I've got my fingers crossed with mine. Hopefully they've finally buried that dead horse.

I see what you are saying

But the intank lift pump is still "pulling" it out of the tank.

The "intank pump" is in the tank, below the fuel level (hense that's why its called intank pump) it can only push when it is submursed in fuel.

Ditto what Geico said... when I pulled my tank to install the vent kit, I noticed the pump was installed so that it sits at the very bottom of the tank submerged in fuel... so it's not really having to pull much.

sounds like the dealer was blowing smoke as from what I read the 05's have the intank pump and mine is still right there with the filter housing. I hope mine stays working for longer than 7K miles this time
