Problem with A/C
Problem with A/C
Any of you have this problem:
Turn Defroster on and when I go to front vents whether recirc or regular it remains blowing like a hurricane sound and no air coming out the front vents.
However, if I turn the truck off and then crank it again, it may or may not come through the front vents. DODGE gave me a screwing(estimate) between 700-800 to replace electrical motors that may be at fault.
A separate problem:
When it does blow through the front vents on a road trip non-towing , it acts like it freezes up. I turn it off and let the proposed ice melt, turn it back on and it is cold again...someties it freezes up sometimes it don't.
Is that a low volume/pressure deal?
My truck is an 04 quad cab 5.9 diesel automatic.

The first issue is probably the recirc door that has gone bad. It's pretty expensive to get it fixed because it takes a lot of labor. Very common problem.
The second issue sounds like it may need a recharge....

The problems sound related. Due to the inability to blow air through the vents, the result is the evaporator care freezing up. Fix one ploblem, the other will be fixed as well. Need more info on the mode door problem though. Mode=vent, floor, defrost, and all inbetween settings.Where is the air blowing out when it doesn't come out of the vents? Defrost? Floor ? No where?
If you want it to work but don't care about it working perfectly (worked very well for me for the past year), then all you need to do is pull the busted recirculation door out of the HVAC unit. This you should be able to do yourself in your driveway in less than 1/2 hour at a cost of nada, zilch, nothing, zero.
First, make sure it is the recirc door.
If your's is still designed like the '03, pull your glove box out. Look through the now open hole in the dash where the glove box was and look for the big air intake for the HVAC. It is covered by a grid of plastic. Start your truck and run the AC, switch back and forth between 'Fresh' and 'Recirc' and see if you can see/feel the door change positions. If it is working it will slap back and forth as you switch. If it isn't working the door is probably laying on the intake of the fan. The grid can be cut out with a hack saw blade. Once the grid is out, reach in and grab the door and work it out. Put the glove box back. Done.
If your recirc door is working, it may be one of the other doors in the HVAC unit. To fix them, the dash needs to be pulled mostly, if not entirely, out.
From fresh to recirc, yeah. Also, when on recirc, the door (which hinges on the top) is swung forward to block off the fresh air intake. When in this position, there is not much blocking the fan noise from entering the cab. Read that as "It's louder". When in Fresh air mode, the door swings back and up to block off the air intake from the cab. The door also has some foam on it to help deaden the noise. So, when it is on Fresh air, the fan sound is blocked and is not as loud.
